Common Is On His Way To 'Selma' To Play Civil Rights Activist James Bevel

Rapper/actor Common is on his way to Ava DuVernay's Selma, to play James Bevel, the civil rights activist who helped set up 1963's "children's crusade" in Birmingham, Alabama, which was a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.


Common joins David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr.Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott KingTom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Ledisi as Mahalia JacksonKeith Stanfield as Jimmie Lee JacksonHenry G. Sanders playing Cager Lee, Jimmie Lee Jackson's grandfather, Andre Holland as Andrew Young, and Tessa Thompson as Diane Nash, in a film produced by Oprah WinfreyBrad Pitt’s Plan B and Christian Colson (who won an Oscar for producing Slumdog Millionaire). 

Paramount Pictures is also on board the Pathe UK-backed project, which centers on the 1965 landmark voting rights campaign regarded as the peak of the civil rights movement.

    I love that Black people have their own special standards for acting. It is really something. White people have actors like Michael Sheen playing historical figures, and we have Common. Black directors really believe that an actual talent for acting pales in comparison to one's ability to rap or collect twitter followers, or be famous.

    I'll buy my ticket opening weekend!

    I wasn't thrilled about ANYbody in the cast, truth be tolt. But I suppose if you told me about the cast for "12 Years A Slave" before it came out, I wouldn't have been excited about that either. So there's that. Look, as long as Ava doesn't push the "gay black female director" agenda I'll be cool.

    @Michelletoo: Ugh, I couldn't agree more. Ava was doing pretty well in terms of casting choices and then you add someone like Common to the mix and it makes me want to vomit! Also makes it difficult to want to support a project like "Selma" when you bring amateurs into the mix.
