In the so-called "specialty box office" category for this weekend... 2 films of note, one new, the other 3 weekends old.

First, the new: AFFRM's 3rd release, Andrew Dosunmu's Restless City.

The Sundance 2011 selection grossed $8,106 on 3 screens (in New York, LA and Atlanta), with a per-screen average of $2,702.

It expands further next weekend, May 4 (Chicago, Philly, DC, Detroit, and Seattle), and will continue to expand throughout May. So if you live in any of those 5 cities, get ready!

I actually expected the film to do better than it did this weekend; granted it opened on just 3 screens, but the per-screen average tells the tale. The screening that I hosted on Friday night was booked solid; if only that was the case for almost every screening. But it's certainly not a film for everyone, and I'm just glad that it finally made it to theaters, after over year since its Sundance 2011 debut.

If you haven't seen it yet, and you're even mildly curious, you really should.

And for the older film... Woman Thou Art Loosed!:On the 7th Day expanded by 4 additional screens this weekend, for a total of 106, and has thus far raked in close to $1.1 million. Not bad at all actually; I had no idea what to expect in terms of box office for the film when it opened, and although I'm sure CodeBlack Entertainment would love to see its figures skyrocket, they are probably pleased with its take thus far.

No numbers yet for Marley though, so nothing to report on it.

I hope Restless City gets to screen in Nigeria sometime this year? Dosunmu has been a positive export over the years with his photography and music videos and should know there are Nigerians craving for his latest.

I'm glad to hear AFFRM will keep expanding despite lesser numbers. It's a great piece of filmmaking.
