Things that make you go hmm...

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times posted earlier today, actor, model and Dancing With The Stars alum William Levy reveals that he'll be starring in an upcoming Tyler Perry movie - a romantic comedy, although he doesn't give away much.

Here's the important piece of the convo:

LA TIMES: So, what are you working on right now?

LEVY: Right now, I feel very blessed, let me tell you, because I had a meeting with Tyler Perry a couple weeks ago and now I have the opportunity to lead in one of his next projects, which starts filming in September. It’s a romantic comedy and, you know, I love love.

LA TIMES: Tell us about your role

LEVY: I can’t. I can’t. I wish I could! It’s very nice. Very good. Not allowed to say more.

LA TIMES: Ah. Well, Tyler Perry. Are you a fan?

LEVY: Absolutely! I respect the guy a lot. He comes from nothing, you know? He worked his way up, which I respect a lot. It’s very nice I have the chance to work with him.

So there ya go; William Levy will be starring in a Tyler Perry project that starts shooting in September - that's just 2 months away, and we haven't reported on any new Tyler Perry projects, other than those that have already been made, and are due to be released in coming months.

Unless I'm just completely blanking out on something.

Looking over his IMDBPro page, the only project that Perry has yet to shoot is Take My Wife, which was announced last year, and which he's supposed to star alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The story centers on a recently-divorced man who tries to avoid paying alimony, by grooming another dude to become his ex's new husband. Tyler Perry is listed as writer and director as well; although it's not known which of the 2 men he'll play, although I can take a guess.

Could this be the film that William Levy is referring to? Could it be that maybe Dwayne Johnson is no longer attached (he has a whole bunch of films on his schedule already, as we've reported here, so maybe he dropped out of this one, which is possible), and Levy is taking his place?

The last project update on the film on its IMDBPro page was in May, and it said it was still in the script phase. But given how Tyler Perry cranks out screenplays and films, it could very well be complete, or close to final draft.

Unless there's an entirely new Tyler Perry project that we know absolutely nothing about. One thing I do recall is that, last fall, Perry said that while shooting Alex Cross, he apparently had a lot of time between takes and shooting days that he ended up writing scripts for 2 more movies during those down periods.

"It was like a vacation, actually... I had so much down time on set that I ended up writing two movies," he said. And what are/were those 2 movies he penned? No word yet still today; at the time, word was that they were "in the early stages."

Could this William Levy project be one of them?

With filming scheduled to begin in September (according to Mr Levy anyway), we should find out soon enough!

Anybody know something we don't?

By the way, per his IMDB page, fans of VH1's Single Ladies probably already know that Levy has appeared in 2 epidodes of that series.

I am reading a lot of negative comments about William Levy. Let's first address the fact that William Levy is not white, he is Cuban. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's necessary to get to know the actor before you put them down. I have loved William Levy for a long time. He is a wonderful actor. If the only shows you have seen him act on were American shows, then that means you saw him on DWTS and Single Ladies. Neither of those shows showcased any of his true acting talent. William Levy is a wonderful actor and not just on the telenovelas (Spanish soap operas) were he plays the lead lover, but he also did an amazing job in "Mujeres Asesinas" in which he played an alcoholic abusive husband. There are numerous other shows that Levy has acted in that truly show his amazing talent. He is so much more than just a beautiful face, so please don't disregard him. If you knew his story about what his life was like in Cuba and how he got to where he is today, you would have much more respect for him as an actor.

Taylor, for your information,''white'' is a race''Cuban'',is a nationality,Cubans, like the rest of Hispanics,CAN BE ON ANY RACE,including WHITE.IT IS ABOUT TIME AMERICANS OPEN CORRECT THAT MISTAKE!!!!

    LOL!

Folks, don't be so impatient to Perry's next project with William Levy, because William is a very talented and attractive actor with lot of chaisma. Just give a chance to the both and the project will be a great success!!!

  • Donella | July 23, 2012 11:56 AMReply

The phrase "jumped the shark" echoes with these latest Tyler Perry projects featuring reality stars in lead roles. Also, "bad Adam Sandler-like productions." No thanks.

  • Orville | July 20, 2012 3:23 PMReply

And if Tyler really wants to expand his brand why doesn't he just make a gay film and come right out of the closet? Anyone who has visited Atlanta will tell you about Mr. Tyler Perry he's well known in Atlanta's gay black community. Tyler might as well take the ultimate risk and make a movie about gay men falling in love.

  • Orville | July 20, 2012 3:17 PMReply

Tyler Perry is obviously a shrewd business man he is simply expanding his brand but will it expand his wallet? I just looked at Box Office Mojo and the Madea's Witness Protection's earnings aren't that great about $56 million which is kind of lower than his other Madea films. He's trying to reach a wider audience which is just good business sense but I hope Tyler doesn't abandon black women they are his core audience and market. So if this guy William Levy is the lead I guess this will have an interracial pairing.

  • Julien | July 20, 2012 12:09 PMReply

This guy is not an actor. On "Single Ladies," his character barely had any lines and when he spoke, it was evident why. Get thee to an acting coach. I think Tyler was just looking at his beauty when he pursued him...for a project.

  • ChgoSista | July 22, 2012 6:05 PM

"Get thee to an acting coach" - LLLOOOLLL

  • Marie | July 20, 2012 7:51 AMReply

The one thing I respected about Tyler Perry was that he was regularly creating roles for black actresses, a group that is given few opportunities. Now even THAT'S gone! I doubt that he'll lose his core audience of black women since they've been consuming his product for so long but his obvious attempt to go mainstream will fail as long as he chooses D-list white actors. It's also a bit insulting that he went from working with Oscar nominees like Taraji P. Henson, Alfre Woodard and Angela Bassett to these particular white actors. Speaks volumes about how Hollywood thinks.

  • ALM | July 26, 2012 10:42 PM

@ Mark: I am entitled to my opinion, just as you are entitled to your opinion. The part that Kardashian acquired should have gone to an actual actress. Then Tyler made the choice to publicly defend Kardashian. She is a narcissistic opportunist, and I am being nice with that description of her.

  • Mark | July 20, 2012 11:30 AM

    Marie & ALM,

I just don't understand you folks. Because Tyler has diversity in his films that makes him some kind of traitor? Kardashian had some bit part. Big deal. Where has Perry abandoned black women? Perry just released "Good Deeds" that starred Gabrielle Union and Thandie Newton! Also, Perry has a TV show called "For Better or Worse" that features a black cast. Perry has another movie for this year called "Aunt Bam's Place" that stars two more black women, Paris Benett and Cassi Davis.

Additionally, Perry has another movie for 2013 called "The Marriage Counselor" that stars 3 black women: Jurnee Smollett, Vanessa Williams, and Brandy Norwood!!!

Before writing this crap, why not do some research. IMDB.com has been around for almost 20 years!!!

  • the black police | July 20, 2012 11:23 AM

What the fuck? So because he casts one white latino guy in his upcoming movie, he is now doing a disservice to black actors, black hollywood and the black community at large? Oh I see. Your fragility amazes me.

  • ALM | July 20, 2012 9:44 AM

@Marie: I agree with the first two sentences of your comment, but I have to provide another side to the rest of your comment. My family has supported his movies in the past, but his lack of growth and his casting choices (i.e. Kim Kardashian) have caused multiple people in my family to stop seeing his movies. I also don't know many people who actually watch his tv shows, but someone is keeping those shows on the air.

I also found it interesting that earlier this year he conducted interviews about the reduction in the already scarce amount of roles for African American actors. He spoke as if he had little to no control in the casting of his movies. He has the power to make his own casting choices, so I am amazed that he has decided to follow the rest of Hollywood as opposed to ramping up his casting of African American actors.

Money is a **** of a drug. He is worth at least $300 or $400 million, with 90% of that money coming from the African American community. I am all for growth, but he is trying to grow in a "mainstream" direction, when he should be growing in the depth of his scripts. The first "Why Did I Get Married" showed the world that there is depth and true talent within him, but he has mistakenly chosen to tap into the other parts of his repertoire.

  • Adam Scott Thompson | July 20, 2012 12:45 AMReply

"It was like a vacation, actually... I had so much down time on set that I ended up writing two movies." That's not surprising. Rough drafts don't really take long, because they don't have to be that good or even coherent. And just to be clear... ALL OF PERRY'S FILMS ARE ROUGH DRAFTS.

  • ALM | July 19, 2012 10:42 PMReply

It looks like he has abandoned his original, faithful core audience in search of a new audience.

  • Mark | July 20, 2012 10:57 AM

That's ridiculous. Because he has a white actor in one of his movies that means he's "abandoned his original, core audience"? That makes no sense. Perry is an auteur. Not a great one but why should he be shackled just making one type of movie? I just find your statement very sad.

  • Darkan | July 19, 2012 9:32 PMReply

Tyler Perry has officially become an enemy of the black republic. *Voice of the emperor* "Commander, execute order 66!" Who really believes he's writing all of those scripts. Like Puffy wrote and produced all those songs in the 90's. *Slaps myself on the back* Good one.

  • turner | July 19, 2012 11:31 PM

Why question how quickly he writes when the proof is on the screen? LMAO

  • Ghost | July 19, 2012 10:43 PM

It's possible to writer scripts that quick. The late Dwayne McDuffie did it quite a few times with Static Shock and even adapting All Star Superman from comic to movie. It just depends and who knows these might be old scripts-he just updated. Remember Let It Shine was a script from 10 years ago.

  • Ron@homo | July 19, 2012 7:49 PMReply

Tyler just come out of the closet already. Bad movies/great movies, I won't respect him til he does.

  • sandra | July 19, 2012 7:21 PMReply

Keep up the good work, Tyler!

  • Spike Lee | July 19, 2012 6:39 PMReply

This is random, but it looks like William and Tyler can be a couple with their pics being side by side like above. LOL! Let me stop, before I start something.

  • the black police | July 20, 2012 1:19 AM

    Stop it.

  • Skee | July 19, 2012 6:27 PMReply

Tyler is getting tired of the complaints from you negros. He is going over to the other side. lol. And I don't blame him. You can never please a house full of negros.

  • Mark | July 20, 2012 10:52 AM

    And the word is "Negroes."

Also, a film that replaces Dwayne Johnson with William Levy would see its funding severely cut. No?

  • Lady Logic | July 20, 2012 7:58 AM

Let's say, a white director, a Michael Bay, gets sick of 'white' complaints about his films. What side is he going to? The majority of Tyler's fan base is African American, back from when he was making his money primarily from his plays. Also this isn't the first time he's had a latin male lead in his films, Adam Rodrigues in 'I Can Do Bad' opposite Taraji.
