One of a few black rom-coms on the horizon, here's your a second look at the trailer for playwright/director David E. Talbert's rom-com, Baggage Claim.

Fox Searchlight moved the film's release date up by a month to September 272013, in what will be one of the most crowded fall seasons in black cinema history, given the number of black films scheduled to open between August and December this year. Some actually had to be moved to early next year to avoid the competition.

The ensemble cast includes Paula PattonTaye Diggs, Derek Luke, Trey SongzJill ScottJ ColeDjimon HounsouAdam BrodyBoris KodjoeTia MowryLala Anthony and others.

Based on Talbert's best-selling debut novel about a flight attendant with thirty days and thirty thousand miles to find a husband, the synopsis for Baggage Claim reads:

Pledging to keep herself from being the oldest and the only woman in her entire family never to wed, Montana embarks on a thirty-day, thirty-thousand-mile expedition to charm a potential suitor into becoming her fiancé. Whom will she choose? Damon Diesel, a P. Diddy wannabe; Reverend Curtis P. Merewether, pastor of Greater House of Deliverance, Tabernacle of Praise, Worship, and Miracles; pompous attorney-turned-councilman Langston Jefferson Battle III; or Quinton Jamison, a multimillionaire who's twenty years her senior?

Patton leads the ensemble cast, starring as our husband-seeking flight attendant.

This will be Talbert's first theatrically-released film since 2008's First Sunday:

I think this movie's gonna make me laugh. I'm gonna watch it!

This movie is going to make us ALL laugh. We ALL better watch it, quite frankly.

Can't please Black folk for nothing. Pretty faces doing pretty things. What is there to get worked up about? One movie isn't gonna "save" Black cinema. It is each drop in the bucket, the films collectively make the change. I'm gonna support it, especially since I didn't see TP's name in this piece.

What does being Black have to do with not wanting to see a rom-com that looks like every other "urban" rom-com?

  • ALM | July 2, 2013 12:01 AMReply

It would be nice if filmmakers would cast Jill Scott in a lead role as opposed to making her a stereotypical thirsty plus sized woman.

  • Miles Ellison | July 2, 2013 12:05 AM

It would be nice, but the public has spoken. Stereotypical wins.

I'm sorry but all these flicks just look the same to me. This one, The Best Man, Think Like A Man, even Ride Along. The all just look the same. Similar casts, similar stories. Just tired. Call me when we finally break away from this rom-com trend. Ick!

All rom-coms are alike. Different story lines and demographic but all the same?

  • JEFTCG | July 1, 2013 10:00 PM

Nadia, I agree, however I don't believe the problem is the rom-com genre. The problem, in my opinion, are the second-rate writers.
