It's been awhile since we last posted anything about Sylvain White; he's one of those few black directors who's been able to navigate the studio system, although, like most of his contemporaries, while his name has been attached to a few projects, not consistently.

His last outing was 2012's The Losers, which really didn't do all that well at the box office, making just over $23 million statesside on a $25 million budget. By comparison, Stomp The Yard, which he directed before The Losers, made over $61 million on a $13 million budget.

As recently as early 2011, he was attached to helm Frank Milller's Ronin and the King Arthur legend Pendragon, and was to produce writer-director Julien Magnat's psychological thriller Faces in the Crowd. No movement on either of the 1st 2; Faces In The Crowd was a straight-to-DVD project after playing the film festival circuit.

And it looks like White isn't content with waiting for Hollywood to move on Ronin Or Pendragon, because, according to Cineuropa, brothaman is currently in Paris, France (his mother is French for those who may not know), getting ready to begin shooting what will be his next project - an adaptation of  French author Jean-Christophe Grangé’s thriller Miserere, which from what I read about it, sounds, well, thrilling!

Here's what Google's translation from French to English:

They are children. They have the purity of the most perfect diamonds. No shadow. No inclusion. No fault. But purity is that of Evil. Strange murder of a choirmaster from Chile in the Armenian Church of Paris. Disappearance of several choir children. Series of murders carried out according to a macabre protocol: unaccountable perforation of eardrums, inscriptions from the "Miserere" by Allegri, mysterious footprints around the corpses. To conduct the investigation, two "borderline" cops - Kasdan, the old retired veteran, and the Volo addict, beautiful like a rock star. Armenian and Russian origins. Two intelligent men, fierce, haunted by their past. Pure, complex, tormented, Baroque. One of Grangé’s best thrillers, perhaps most disturbing, that combines children, torture, scientific experiments and music...

Again, that was Google's translation, so it's a little rough, but I think you get the picture.

So who's starring in White's adaptation? Gérard Depardieu as the veteran, and Joey Starr as Volo the addict that looks like a "beautiful rock star."

Thierry Lhermitte, Belgian actress Helena Noguerra, and Swiss actress Marthe Keller round out what appears to be a rather strong cast.

Produced by Stéphane Sperry for Liaison Films, the all-French production of Miserere has a €15m budget (or about $20 million), with backing from Pathé Films, as well as pre-sales by Canal + and Ciné+.

Production begins on Monday in Paris, with a 3-month schedule expected, and a few locations in Belgium as well.

Needless to I haven't read the book, so if any of our French readers have, share your thoughts.

But its good to Sylvain getting behind the camera again. Whether this'll travel stateside is another story.
