It was August when it was announced that veteran producer Debra Martin Chase had inked a 2-year deal at ABC Studios, which will see her develop TV projects through her company, Martin Chase Prods.

The new deal brings Chase back to ABC, where she launced her TV career as exec producer of the 1997 musical film Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston

At the time, it was said that Chase was on the hunt for a "dedicated TV executive" to assist her in this new ABC deal. Apparently she's found one in Charles Pugliese (co-producer of I'm Not There for the big screen, and GCB for TV).

As Chase noted at the time...

"The best drama now is on television with terrific writing and great acting... What would be a medium-size feature that may not get made now can move to TV (as a series) with great success... ABC’s brand of sexy, emotional and fun female-driven, character-driven dramas is what I do, so my brand and sensibility fits very well with theirs."

She pointed to ABC series like Shonda Rhimes' Scandal as an example of the kind of show she likes.

Skip ahead a couple months to the first project under this 2-year deal with ABC, a drama titled Legacy, and described as...

... a sexy soap and a modern-day twist on the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations.

Jeremy Anderson and Patrick Moss will write the script and co-executive produce. Debra Martin Martin will executive produce.

The original Great Expectations follows the evolution an orphan named Pip, essentially a coming-of-age tale set in London in the early-to-mid 1800s. No word on how exactly the story will be adapted into a sexy soap with a modern-day twist; and nothing on casting yet either, or ETA.

Chase has produced several film and TV projects including Just Wright, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and the recent Sparkle remake.

Good for her, but there is a lot going on in that description above.

DMC has had a unsuccessful run lately, but I'm sure she'll bounce back soon. I don't have enough info about this project to get excited. Interesting to note, there will be TWO Great Expectations in the works. According to Screen Rant, "youth-centric network The CW is sticking with its dramatic-romance roots by commissioning a script order for Expectations – which is described as a modern re-imagining of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations" (produced by Reese Witherspoon).

The adult cartoons are probably more your steelo, but that's no reason to snark this project. I love Great Expectations, and hope they inject some black actors into the new series.

Traveling Pants and the first Princess Diaries were actually good; maybe teeny-bop fare is her strong suit.

LOL with you. From the great minds behind Just Wright, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and the recent Sparkle remake dud, more B-flicks being transformed into B-level TV programs, aka sexy soap operas. Yeah, great news. That's what we need. :-( Yaaaaaaaawwwwn, wake me when black folks no longer are being pimped for green dollars. WAIT! That sounds like the beginning of a new reality show...
