Denzel Washington's Rear Fills Up the Poster for 'The Equalizer'

It's just not often that a studio-backed film, starring an A-list star, will come with a poster that doesn't prominently feature that star.

The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington

Riddle me this... how often do official release posters for studio pictures, with A-list talent, not feature the starring actor's face? I can't think of a single Tom Cruise movie, for example, whose release poster wasn't dominated by Cruise's face; I can't think of one in which all we saw was his rear. Same for the likes of Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and other A-listers.

To be clear, I'm not implying any sort of racial bias of conspiracy here; after all, I can ask the same about Will Smith movies.

It's just an observation that I thought was worth mentioning. It's not often that a studio-backed film, starring an A-list star, will release a poster that doesn't prominently feature that star.

I suppose maybe the fact that Denzel Washington's name is prominently displayed is enough of a sell, and we don't necessarily have to see his face. We just assume that we're looking at him - his rear anyway - since we already know what he looks like.

But it's an interesting poster. A casually-dressed bald-headed man, standing with a seemingly relaxed posture, with his back to us; shirt collar up; hands at his side, free of any weapons, despite the fact that his faceless, professionally-dressed distant opposition (we can assume), appears to be approaching him with some urgency, with what looks like a rifle in hand. Diametrical opposites. The everyman versus the fat-cat.

Sony Pictures' upcoming adaptation of the TV series, "The Equalizer," starring Denzel Washington, will be released on September 26, 2014.

Chloe Moretz, Marton Csokas and Melissa Leo, co-star with Washington in the film, which, by the way, is directed by Washington's "Training Day" helmer, Antoine Fuqua, from a script written by Richard Wenk.

The reportedly $50 million project is said to be designed to launch the first film franchise for Mr Washington - hence, if this first film does well, expect sequels. One has already been rumored to have been greenlit, even though the first film hasn't been released yet. It was said to have scored particularly well with test audience.

The TV series the film is based on was set in New York, and centered on a former secret agent (played by the late Edward Woodward) with a "mysterious past" who tries to atone for past sins by offering, free of charge, his services as an investigator, aided by a diverse group of other sometimes-mysterious contacts (some of whom date back to his spying days).

In the film adaptation, Washington plays Robert McCall, a retired intelligence operator who faked his own death to live under the radar. But after finding a young woman (played by Chloe Moretz) in trouble with the Russian mob, he returns to action to use his extreme tactics for good.

This'll probably be more like Denzel Washington in "Man On Fire" mode.
