Derek Luke, who, coincidentally, we'll be interviewing soon for his role in the upcoming new season of Jada Pinkett's TNT series, Hawthorne, has joined that ensemble cast of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

The synopsis for the film. a sci-fi romance, reads: As an asteroid nears Earth, a man (played by Steve Carell) finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor (played by Keira Knightley) who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan.

Derek Luke will play Knightley’s love interest - "an Army man who wants her to join him in a bomb shelter."

Also in this ensemble cast are William Petersen, Adam Brody and Rob Corddry.

Lorene Scafaria, who also wrote the screenplay, will direct the film, which begins production next week in Los Angeles - her debut.

IR romance is not the common occurrence in Hollywood that someone here suggested. It is actual rare relative speaking. When it is handled though it typically involves a white male and some woman of color. So lets not act as if Luke's role is an indication of some type of trend.

IR romance is already a common occurrence in Hollyweird. It's just a pathetic token gesture to keep blacks from complaining that there are no POC in a film. or tv show One black is okay but heaven forbid there might be more than one - white people won't want to watch cause that would make it an "urban" piece.

Anyway, with Steve Carrell in this film it'll probably flop anyway. May as well have Jack Black as the lead.

This sounds really interesting. I've always liked Derek Luke. I'll def stay tuned to any news about this.

Keira and Derek hmm.. unlikely pair but it's nice that he'll be playing the love interest of one of "Hollywood's A-list actresses".

I have a feeling IR romance will be a much more common occurrence in Hollywood. It's just too bad black leads aren't a popular concept in mainstream Hollywood. *shrug*
