Despite Hurricane Irene "Colombiana" Looks Headed For No. 2 B.O. Slot

It's pretty obvious that Hurricane Irene (which is battering the East Coast at the very moment, from North Carolina to Cape Cod) is going to have a huge effect on this weekend's box office numbers. Some are predicting that studios and distribtutors will lose as much as $30 million because of the storm.

However, despite all that, Columbiana looks like it's headed to be the No 2 film this weekend, coming after (what else?) The Help, with an estimated total of $11 million.

Now wait here folks... We're not about to announce the winner of the "Guess Columbiana Opening Box Office" contest just yet. Things are very fluid, and anything can change; we will, of course, post the final numbers on Sunday. But all factors considered, $11 million is not bad at all.

And also keep in mind that the film is aimed more for the international market, especially in Europe and Latin America, so what it does in the U.S. is only a fraction of what the film will gross worldwide.. But one can only guess what its final weekend b.o. numbers would have been without that hurricane.

Columbiana should do well over sea, I think that is her market. She can forget about over here - unless she can pull the young white males. I don't see it.

Unless you live on a tropical island or were planning for Irene, your movie plans for Friday should not have been affected. Its today and Sunday where the issue becomes more of a problem. Of course if your home is out of power and a nearby theater has power....why not? I should be checking out "The Help" on Sunday.

According to Boxofficemojo website Colombiana has already made over $6 million dollars in France and Belgium. I think the movie will do well in Europe.

P.S. All this goes back what I always say that it's B.S. that films with black leads don't "sell"overseas. If even 50 Cent is making deals for his films in foreign markets why can't other films? There's a whole "Non-European" world out there hungry for movies.

But keep in mind that The Help is going to do little to no business overseas since the subject matter is "foreign" to foreigners. That's why the film's budget was so low for a Hollywood film around $25 million. It has to make all its money domestically.

Columbiana however is an $40 million action film (and action sells all over the world) and with a beautiful woman of color in the lead. That film is going to do some business overseas, especially in Latin America, South Africa and the Middle East

I know it's based on a best-selling novel, but if anyone had told me that THE HELP would be a $100+ million box office picture at the start of this year, long before it came out, I would have said "no way!" I figured it would do modest box office, and win an award or two. Didn't expect this kind of box office though. At #1 in its 3rd week...
