Despite my misgivings about the film that his life inspired (misgivings that have nothing to do with the real man himself, as I know him), if there's one very good thing that comes out of the release of Lee Daniels' The Butler, it's that it will likely generate public interest in the story of the real life butler, the late Eugene Allen - a story that apparently no one was interested in or intrigued by until journalist Wil Haygood, working on President Obama's 2008 presidential run, sought out stories from White House staff who had been employed there prior to the signing of the Civil Rights Act in the mid-1960s.

At this year’s National Association for Black Journalists Convention, I received the opportunity to talk briefly, one on one with Lee Daniels (director of ‘The Butler’) and Wil Haygood (the author of ‘The Butler’) about their new movie ‘Lee Daniels’ ‘The Butler’. They both talk about how this movie can help the younger generations learn more about their history and how their lives related to the movie.

Here are 4 new clips from Lee Daniels' The Butler - a film that was in the middle of a legal battle between its distributor, The Weinstein Company, and their opponent, Warner Bros., but the fight is now over, with the film set for release in 2 weeks, on August 16.

In yesterday's update, Harvey Weinstein had enlisted the civil rights leader trio comprised of Jesse Jackson, NAACP president & CEO Ben Jealous, and National Chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality, Roy Innis, in his fight against Warner Bros. over the use of the title The Butler. And also, attorneys for both sides made further appeals in a hearing of the MPAA’s Title Registration Bureau.

I was hoping this had been put to bed already, since I hadn't read any updates in a little while. But it's still very much in play.

Quite timely and certainly topical. I'm sure we're all intimately aware of enraging/horrific/sad/scary real-life stories of Black men facing injustice within the American judicial system, broadly speaking, especially when the victim of whatever crime they are charged with, is white and female.

Our friends at The Root interviewed director Lee Daniels a few days before Sunday's Oscar ceremony, and in that interview they talked specifically about Django Unchained (Daniels had been silent on the film, and shares his thoughts on it w/ The Root; in short, he hated it), Spike Lee (notably the backlash he faced when he said Django Unchained was disrespectful to our ancestors, and how much love Daniels has for Spike and the work he's done, and for having the balls to speak out against the film), why it's still tough for black films to get made in Hollywood, and more.

Another potential project for Lee Daniels' future slate; as we've already reported, over the last 2 to 3 years, since Precious, Daniels’ name has been attached to quite a few projects – Selma, Miss Saigon, Iced, Anna In The Tropics, The Butler, and, most recently, The Paperboy, which is in theaters, and not exactly lighting the box office on fire, or drawing lots of critical acclaim. It's Daniels in Shadowboxer mode - in retrograde.
