No question that Spike Lee’s current Kickstarter campaign for his latest project has created some controversy, and judging from the photo above, it seems that Spike and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg seem to get along.

I had the script for [the sequel] to School Daze... a contemporary version, same school... 25 years later. Hopefully I can get Laurence Fishburne to play Dap... he'll be the president now of the school. It would deal with issues in HSBCUs today... some of the same stuff from the last film... like the pledging process... but also lots of new stuff... like homophobia... it's a big subject in it... class issues, color, hair texture... but it's stuff happening today.

The one thing that immediately jumped out at me in looking over this list from Spike Lee, is the near-absence of films by black filmmakers. I counted 3 total: Charles Burnett's Killer Of Sheep, John Singleton's Boyz N The Hood, and Michael Schultz's Coolie High.

As Tambay noted yesterday, I got a chance to talk one-on-one with director Spike Lee about his recently launched Kickstarter campaign to raise $1.25 million for his next feature film. Specifically, he's said that he reads this site and others, is aware of both the positive and negative responses to his campaign, and wanted to address some details about his project and what it means.
