Praise for Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave has been near-deafening, with critics and audiences alike, who've seen the film ahead of its October release, appreciative of its attempts to capture, honestly, the realism and brutality of slavery in this country. And while I found it a certainly well-made, frank film, I'll also say that there's still an even more brutal film about slavery to be made.

In my interview with Steve McQueen over the weekend, one of the questions on my list to ask him, was whether he still planned to direct a feature film based on the life Afrobeat pioneer and activist, Fela Kuti, which was to star Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Perhaps it comes as no surprise to many of us that Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave was awarded the top prize - the People's Choice Award that is - at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

I love the no-nonsense way in which Steve McQueen handles himself. It's so rare to see this kind of forthrightness and outward displays of emotion from industry types - then again, I suppose he's still something of an *outsider,* not living in Hollywood (he doesn't even live in the USA actually).

Here's a nice behind-the-scenes featurette, highlighting the making of the film, featuring key cast and crew, including director Steve McQueen and star Chiwetel Ejiofor, as well as a lot of new footage not seen in the only trailer that's been released thus far.

Well, shucks! We won't be there for it unfortunately. We may have, if I was aware that it would be screening there, but, Telluride is one of those film festivals... it traditionally doesn't unveil its slate until attendees are well on their way to the festival. In essence, you attend the festival blindly, not knowing before you book your trip, what films will be screened, and may not even know until you get there.

On the heels of Tambay's Book-To-Film report yesterday, I had an opportunity to read a 2011 draft of the adapted screenplay for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, a film we’ve been eagerly anticipating and debating about for many months now. We know Chiwetel Ejiofor is slated to play Solomon Northup (excellent choice by the way) a free Black man, a distinguished fiddler player from the north, kidnapped in the mid 1800’s by two con-men, who convince Northup to come along with them to join a grand circus tour, while Northup’s wife and children are out of town.

NOTE: If you don't like spoilers, I strongly suggest that you skip this entire post. I don't give everything away, and we don't even really know with certainty how different the film will be from the novel. But just a precaution.

Now that we finally can see the trailer for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave (BELOW on this page), what better time to tell you again, as I told you back in January, that 12 Years A Slave is not the first film version of the story.

This actually makes more sense to me. I wondered about the initially-planned December 27 release date.
