Discover the world of Dido Belle Lindsay (as played by star Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and the characters around her, in a behind the scenes featurette from Fox Searchight's upcoming period drama Belle, directed by Amma Asante, which is set for release in the USA on May 2, 2014

The period drama about the trials and tribulations of a mixed-race girl, in the 1700s, which made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, stars Mbatha-Raw, Miranda RichardsonTom Wilkinson, Sarah GadonSam Claflin, and Matthew Goode

The story takes place in the 1780s, and is based on a true story - specifically, the true story of Dido Belle, a mixed-race woman raised as an aristocrat in 18th-century England. It follows Belle, adopted into an aristocratic family, who faces class and color prejudices. As she blossoms into a young woman, she develops a relationship with a vicar's son who is an advocate for slave emancipation.

Tom Felton (from the Harry Potter movies), Sam Reid (playing Belle's love interest), James Norton and Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey) co-star.

Misan Sagay penned the script; Damian Jones produced.

Zeba positively reviewed the film at TIFF. Read her thoughts HERE.

There is an interesting connection between Belle and Jane Austen. Belle's great uncle Lord Mansfield, in whose house she lived, had been a very good poet in his youth. His friend, the poet and dramatist Lady Sophia Burrell, praised him as a great poet in one of her poems and dedicated her volume of poetry to him. Lady Sophia Burrell also wrote another poem to her friend Eliza de Feuillide in which she praised Eliza de Feuillide as a great novelist. Eliza de Feuillide was the cousin and sister in law of Jane Austen and the real author of Jane Austen's novels. For further details see my book "Jane Austen - a New Revelation".
