Youth dance movies are apparently an international ox office goldmine. Who knew?

Consider the last 3 movies in the Step Up franchise: Step Up Revolution, Step Up 3-D, Step Up 2 the Streets. On average, each made a whopping 70% of box office gross outside the USA. So it's no surprise that the franchise continues, and others look to exploit the genre by producing their own versions.

Today brings news that Pathe International and Warner Bros UK are backing a scripted feature film that will star the successful UK dance troupe called Diversity, who beat out Susan Boyle in the third season of the popular talent show Britain’s Got Talent.

The film will be called Diversity: Rise, and will be directed by Euros Lyn (Doctor Who, Sherlock) from a script by newcomer Tom Edge

The film is scheduled to start shooting in the UK in April. David Livingstone is producing for Calamity Films.

Diversity is made up of three sets of brothers and four other members, ranging from 15 to 27.

Producer Livinstone told Screen: "Diversity is the biggest street dance group in the world in terms of ticket sales. This is a sensational story. Of course, we have high expectations for the film’s success in the UK, but judging on the global success of the likes of Step Up there is a broader market out there for entertaining dance films."

The group's frontman Ashley Banjo (son of Nigerian professional boxer Foju Banjo) will handle all choreographing duties in the film.
