Creatively Speaking presents: Haiti the Myth and the Majesty

Film series looks to uplift and enrich Haitian Culture through film.


Harlem, New York, May 1, 2013- Uplifting and re-thinking the Myth and Majesty of Haiti is the theme for Creatively Speaking Film Series’ May and June programs. On May 15th and 16th the film series pays homage to this vibrant and resolute nation by showing When the Drum is Beating by Whitney Dow, and Amour Infinity by Jerry LaMothe at MIST Harlem.

May’s theme transpired from the overwhelming amount of power and beauty looming over Haiti. The film series looks to show the country’s dynamic spirit of greatness in the films, When the Drum is Beating by Whitney Dow and Amour Infinity by Jerry LaMothe. Then, combined with “Toussaint L’Ouverture” screening on June 21st , these films will leave the audience in awe with their stories, visual imagery and captivating history of Haiti.

Film Details: Wednesday, May 15th - 4pm and Thursday, May 16th at 6pm.

When the Drum is Beating by Whitney Dow – 2011, 84 mins This essential documentary reveals how the power of music can bring a community together while delivering a positive message chronicling the history of Haiti, while celebrating one of Haiti's national cultural treasures, the 62 year band, Septentrional (aka Septen). This film is emblematic of the spirit of Septen’s amazing music, its passion for Haitian people, and the rebuilding of Haiti's splendor. Filmmaker will be in attendance for 6pm Thursday screening.

Thursday, May 16th at 4pm and 8pm.

Amour Infinity by Jerry LaMothe – 2001, 85 mins Creatively Speaking is pleased to collaborate with ActNow Foundation’s “New Voices in Black Cinema” for the 13th anniversary of the release of “Amour Infinity” by Jerry LaMothe. The film tells the story of a single father, Derek, trying to raise a young son in a rough-and-tumble

Brooklyn neighborhood. Derek has to face a tough decision -- stick with a relationship that's not working, for the sake of his son or take a chance on love? This exceptional narrative by Haitian filmmaker LaMothe premiered to critical acclaim in 2000, and is now making its retrospective appearance at MIST Harlem. Filmmaker will be in attendance for Q&A for the 8pm screening.
