Here's the first trailer for that Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson crime drama we first told you about in early 2011 and haven't written a word about since. Probably because there's been nothing about it to write about... until today, now that its trailer has turned up online.
Robert De Niro and Forest Whitaker join 50 in the starring cast of this cop action drama titled Freelancers, in which Fiddy plays the son of a slain NYPD officer who, with his two best friends, joins the Police Academy. After graduating, he's taken under the wing of his father's former partner, Captain Joe Sarcone (De Niro), and he becomes part of Sarcone's rogue task force.
The film, which is co-produced by Jackson, was directed by Jessy Terrero (Soul Plane). It was produced under the 10-picture, $200 million agreement that Jackson and his Cheetah Vision production company have with George Furla's Hedge Fund Film Partners.
I don't even know what to say about this, but I can't knock 50's hustle. He keeps pushing product out, no matter what we think of the product. I was surprised to see Whitaker and De Niro in this, and I like how the trailer reminds us of their Oscar wins, suggesting that this is a film of that caliber. Well, maybe I'm more surprised to see Whitaker in it than De Niro who just seems to be booking jobs to pad his retirement funds, and not because he's all into them. He was in that New Year's Eve movie for chrissakes!
But 50 keeps attracting top-shelf talent to his films, and he keeps getting hired for others. Next up on the big screen we'll see him with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Tomb, which is out next year.
Freelancers on the otherhand, is heading straight to DVD later this year, just like several of 50's most recent movies under the 10-picture $200 million deal. But he's apparently making money.
Here's the trailer (h/t The Playlist):
