Corey Grant's comedy/drama Dysfunctional Friends, a film that premiered at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami this year, where one of its starring ensemble cast Persia White won the Best Actress Award, will open in limited release in theaters through AMC Independent, on Friday, February 3rd, 2012.

The movie's ensemble cast comprises several names of young Black Hollywood actors and actresses you'll immediately be familiar with, like (other than the aforementioned Persia White) Meagan Good, Tatyana Ali, Essence Atkins, Reagan Gomez, Stacey Dash, Stacy Keibler, Keith Robinson, Jason Weaver, Wesley Jonathan, Vanessa Simmons, and a few others. NFL pro Terrell Owens also co-stars by the way - in what will be his big screen debut.

Datari Turner, who also produced the film, co-stars as well.

The film was profiled on S&A a few weeks ago, with a teaser clip; for those who missed that post, here's the film's description again:

A Comedy/ Drama reminiscent of The Big Chill, Nine estranged friends are reunited after their larger then life friend unexpectedly dies. The friends who haven't seen each other in years are all forced to stay at their deceased friends estate for the weekend and must reconnect with each other working through all of their issues in order to each collect their inheritance.

I didn't get to see the film at ABFF this summer, but my comrade over at BlackFilm.com did, and he was very positive on it.

And now you've got less than 2 months to go until you'll get to see it for yourselves, when it opens theatrically, though limited, on February 3rd, 2012.

Here's a clip from the film (full poster underneath):

This film sold out everyday at ABFF and won some awards I think. The articles don't do it justice. This really is a great film trust.

    I'll be there!!!

  • Ray | December 18, 2011 3:20 PMReply

Looks like a Tyler Perry movie but I'll go see it. We gotta support Black People

  • Don Draper | December 18, 2011 12:37 PMReply

Why is the only white actress in the middle and the only one sitting comfortably. lol. images are sooo interesting [photographers and directors will know what I mean]. that is a crazy cast! Some talent agency dusted off a folder entitled "black child actors for TV &Film [1990 -2000]"

I like the tone but I don't know how he got away with having TV and film actors in a production with such terrible sound and light production and editing. Really bad considering.

  • bondgirl | December 18, 2011 7:21 PM

Not exactly Don, but it does look that way right? (re: the talent agency quip) It was more like cronyism was at play here, according to what I heard at the talkback. Datari seems to have cultivated relationships with quite a few of these actors. Still unsure if that means he doesn't hang out with dark-skinned women. And I agree 100% on the production value...it appears really piss poor.

    Going to see this!

  • Foxy | December 16, 2011 4:04 PMReply

Stacey Dash is the epitome of beauty!

  • Nadine | December 16, 2011 8:48 AMReply

...Hmmm...good start! I need to know more about the plot, but I'm so proud of T.O.

  • Mixed Barbie | December 15, 2011 11:07 PMReply

Tried to see it at ABFF and the line was around the corner so I didn't get in. I met Christian Keyes T.O. and Datari afterwards and got a picture with them so that made up for it. I will go see it in theaters

Great film! Saw it at ABFF. Corey and Datari are obviously talented. Good to see great things happen to great people. Hope to work with these guys in the future.

I don't even think that "teaser scene" made it to the movie. It wasn't in the cut they showed at ABFF. Must be a deleted scene or something, it doesn't even look finished.

Here's a clip from the finale of the T.O. Show that shows some of the ABFF premiere, as well as an ACTUAL SCENE from the movie, between T.O. and Stacey Dash:

  • Peaches | December 13, 2011 7:47 PMReply

Say what you want but this is a really great film! It's going to surprise ALOT of people. Not your typical black film. Corey and Datari did a really great job!

  • Ava | December 13, 2011 5:58 PMReply

Saw the film at ABFF. Seriously don't sleep on this film. It's really good! One of the best Black films I've seen in the last 10 years along with Jumping the Broom. The music in the film was also great!

  • Akimbo | December 13, 2011 7:02 PM

    But...Jumping the Broom wasn't...very good?

  • Suave | December 13, 2011 5:30 PMReply

Datari Turner is the next Tyler Perry Period

  • Jayson | December 13, 2011 4:50 AMReply

I saw this at ABFF. Definitely worth checking. The whole theater was cracking up. Lol

  • Micah | December 12, 2011 11:35 PMReply

They should shoot whoever made the poster. There seems to be no thought put into it whatsoever. It's not appealing to the eye in the least bit. At least it has attractive people on it. Still it's not something the would get anyone interested in seeing a movie. The trailer wasn't doing this movie any favors either. The actors abilities are definitely not even. I do respect that Corey Grant was able to put this together though. That is not a small task.

  • Jayson | December 13, 2011 4:52 AM

I believe that's a teaser scene not trailer. They need one tho cuz that scene sucks. Doesn't represent the movie I saw in Miami

  • ShebaBaby | December 12, 2011 6:23 PMReply

Okay if I'm not mistaken, wasn't there a film that came out a couple years ago about the same thing that showed on BET. I think it was called "Flip the Script" and starred Robin Givens and dude from Juwanna Man?

  • Akimbo | December 12, 2011 4:26 PMReply

Whoa, mega-cast. Looks like they just scooped up whoever was hanging around Atlanta at the time. Will be interested to hear more about it.
