Out on iTunes and cable VOD nationwide today, via TribecaFilm, is Judd Ehrlich’s critically-acclaimed feature documentary, "We Could Be King," which chronicles what happens when of 2 rival Philadelphia high schools -  - Germantown and Martin Luther King, both long-time rivals - are forced to merge due to financial problems.

Like so many U.S. cities across the country, the merger was the result of a budget crisis which forced Philadelphia to lay off over 4000 employees and close 37 schools.

  • Slashing budgets and still facing shortfalls, Philadelphia did the unthinkable. It shuttered Germantown High School and sent its students to archrival Martin Luther King, leaving a first-time head coach and a new principal to join together in a fight to unite bitter adversaries. An intimate and unflinching snapshot of urban America's education crisis, "We Could Be King" is a celebration of the power of sports to bring young people, neighborhoods and a city together.

Produced by Caitlin Mae Burke, Judd Ehrlich, and Ruchi Mital, the film features the onscreen contributions of Coach Ed Dunn, Dontae Angus, Sal Henderson, Joe Walker, Artise Nelson, Michelle “Mickey” Grace, coach Kevin Norris, coach Damon Linder, coach Mike Barbarito, Robert Coleman, Dr. William Hite, William Wade, and NFL player Sharrif Floyd.

"We Could Be King" enjoyed a limited theatrical release earlier this year, was later broadcast on ESPN2, and is now widely-available on iTunes and cable VOD.

An S&A review is forthcoming, but in the meantime, we've been granted a clip-tease from the film, to further entice you to seek it out now that it's within reach, just in time for the fall season.
