Newlyweeds
Phase 4 Films will open the Sundance Film Festival crowd-pleasing stoner dramedy, Newlyweeds, on September 182013, at Film Forum theaters here in New York City.

The gritty, stoner romantic dramedy, writer/director Shaka King's feature film debut, stars Amari Cheatom and newcomer Trae Harris, in a bittersweet blend of comedy and drama that tells the story of polar opposites Lyle (Cheatom) and Nina (Harris) - a repo-man and a flower child whose bond is forged and frayed by their mutual adoration and voracious consumption of cannabis.

Isiah WhitlockColman Domingo, Tonya Pinkins, Diane NealAdrian Martinez and Hassan Johnson round out the cast.

Jim WareckMichael MatthewsShaka King and Gbenga Akinnagbe are all producers.

Ahead of its September theatrical debut, Newlyweeds will screen at the Rooftop Films summer screening series, here in NYC, tomorrow, July 18, at 9pm. More info on that screening HERE

Also, it's one of 10 feature films selected by the Sundance Institute for the first-ever NEXT WEEKEND film festival (an extension of the popular NEXT <=> section at the Sundance Film Festival), August 8-11, which takes places at Sundance Sunset Cinema and additional venues throughout Los Angeles.

Tickets ($12–15) are on sale now for Sundance Institute members and will be available to the public, tomorrow, Thursday at www.sundance.org/nexttickets.

For more information about NEXT WEEKEND, including screening dates, times and locations, visit www.sundance.org/next.

Zeba saw Newlyweeds at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and reviewed the film enthusiastically HERE.

Ahead of both pre-release screenings, S&A has been given an exclusive first look at the film's first official release poster, which is embedded in full below. I asked director Shaka King to talk briefly about the poster's design (which I love), and here's what he shared:

The "Mean Streets" poster was actually a major inspiration. I always liked the smoking gun merging with the cityscape and knew I wanted to do something similar. We were also inspired by a lot of Grateful Dead album covers because they contain a lot of mystery and quite frankly, make you want to get high, if that's your thing. We believe we have a cult classic in this film and the poster should reflect that.

Indeed.

It does have a kind of retro, psychedelic vibe to it.
