L.A. Rebellion

As you are well aware the UCLA Film Archive just completed its three month long film festival of movies made by the "L.A. Rebelllion" group of black filmmakers which explored the lasting impact and importance of these films. Several of those films that were screened were reviewed here by Brandon Wilson and Nijla Mumin.

Filmmakers such as Halie Gerima, Charles Burnett, Billy Woodbury and Julie Dash with their films, Sankofa, Ashes and Embers, Bless Their Little Hearts, Daughers of the Dust. Killer of Sheep and My Brother's Wedding were among many other films and filmmakers that completely tranformed not just black cinema but world cinema as well.

Now filmmaker Zeinabu irene Davis, who is also a professor at University of California at San Diego, is currently seeking funds though Indiegogo to complete her documentary-in-progress about the L.A. Rebellion filmmakers called Spirits of Rebellion.

As she states in her news release:

I will continue to work on the documentary, "Spirits of Rebellion: Black Cinema at UCLA" for the next year or so, but I do need your support. If you have any means to contribute financially to the project by December 31st, I would greatly appreciate your efforts towards the Indiegogo campaign that we are running.

If you don't have financial means I would appreciate you spreading the word about the project to others who might have financial means or to any funders or organizations that might be willing to help.

Tax deductible contributions can be arranged through my fiscal sponsor, Media Arts Center, San Diego.

Several of you have already contributed to the project and I really appreciate you and acknowledge your efforts. I have no funding to continue the project after this week and I very much would like to continue shooting interviews with the filmmakers who are in LA and to start the editing process. But all of these efforts take money - there is roundtrip gas to cover between San Diego and Los Angeles; salaries to various crew and editor Lillian Benson and hard drives and transcriptions that have to be done to store the project and keep the material organized.

Again, I appreciate the tremendous support and time that you all have given to the project so far and I look forward to sharing the completed work with you in the near future!

I can't think of a project more worthy of your support; you can go HERE for the project's Indegogo page, to find out more and how you can help complete her vision.

Ms. Davis also has a trailer for her work in progress that you can watch below:
