Here’s your first official look at Angela Bassett and Mary J. Blige in the upcoming Lifetime original movie project previously titled Parallel Lives, but is now titled, Betty & Coretta.

As announced earlier today, the tele-film will premiere on Saturday, February 2 at 8/7cand will center on the relationship between Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King - specifically, it'll follow how they continued on as single mothers, after their husbands were assassinated - their husbands being Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.

As already reported, Mary J. Blige will play Betty Shabazz, and Angela Bassett will play Coretta Scott King.

Malik Yoba will play Martin Luther King Jr, while, Lindsay Owen Pierre is playing Malcolm X in the movie.

Ruby Dee will appear on-screen as a "historical witness" to narrate the story, "as someone familiar with the events of both their lives."

Yves Simoneau, who recently directed a Beauty And The Beast TV-movie for ABC Studios, will direct Betty And Coretta, from a script penned by Shem Bitterman (he last wrote and directed a feature dramedy titled The Job in 2009).

The film is co-produced by Blige, as well as Larry Stanitsky, with Jaja Johnson and Polly Anthony executive producing.

The film will be one of 3 headlining Lifetime's Black History Month celebration; the other 2 being Twist of Faith, starring Toni BraxtonMykelti Williamson and David Julian Hirsh; and Pastor Brown, featuring Salli Richardson-WhitfieldKeith DavidErnie HudsonTisha Campbell-MartinNicole Ari ParkerRockmond Dunbar and Michael B. Jordan.

As I said in today's earlier post, look for a first trailer soon.

Wait a sec, Angela played Betty in Spike Lee's "X". Although I wasn't big on her representing Betty X, she did a great job. So, now she gets to act opposite her alternate self? Also, I agree that that screenshot is ridiculous. I hope this is not just an attempt to drum up ratings--which it is--and these movies have some depth.

ok..I'll bring up one of the obvious contradictions.

Angela Basset is a GREAT actress, but she looks absolutley NOTHING like fact...I'll say it , she looks about as close to Coretta as Zoe Saldana does to Nina Simone.

Angela should be playing Betty Shabazz. Mary can't act.

  • Everette | January 10, 2013 3:19 PM

Exactly Jacquie. In fact she already played her in X.

I completely agree. Totally ridiculous. And it will not get better until we expect and want better.
