First Looks At All-Star Cast Of Black Cowboy Opera "They Die By Dawn"

It's titled They Die By Dawn - described as a western featuring black cowboys, conceived and directed by Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts (a collaborative group of artists - both music and film - headed by Samuel).

And you'll be impressed with this all-star cast for They Die By Dawn: Idris Elba, Jesse Williams, Michael K. Williams, Isaiah Washington, Bokeem Woodbine, Clifton Powell, Harry Lennix, Denzel Whitaker, Roger Guenveur SmithRosario Dawson, Kelly HuShanola Hampton, Erykah Badu, and others.

But it's not a feature film unfortunately; it's a short (I don't have length info yet).

The film is reportedly based on a series of real-life stories.

Here's the synop:

Four outlaws with a bounty on each head, set a date for a shootout in Langston, Oklahoma. The last man takes the collective bounty. Violence and mayhem ensue.

Info is limited at the moment, but I did find one profile of The Bullitts that said the project "aims to intertwine narrative, suspense and music into one studio development." In essence, they plan to make a film :)

I'm definitely curious what Samuel is cooking up here, especially with this cast.

The film is currently in production, with shooting apparently already underway - if not very soon to be - in Melody Ranch, Los Angeles.

Rosario Dawson tweeted the pictures above and below of some of the cast members in costume, on set.

It's sad how the many contributions and exploits of black "cowboys" have been virtually lost with time. A quality cast in short film is a nice start to pay homage to them. Also while the picture of Badu looks woefully out of place, it may just be that it wasn't shot in the same manner as the rest of the pictures. She may fit in very well with in the actual film. The look on her face doesn't help though but I'm still a big fan of her hers.

What the f**k is this? I aint heard nothing about it. About time we had a black western (that ain't that Posse crap)!
Amazeballs! I literally cannot wait to see it!

was badu even in "gang of roses"? Was she unconvincing in her previous movie roles? if not then (?) I'm surprised nobody is calling this "POSSE 2" they way y'all are sounding.

I hope it doesnt end up being a musical, I'd hate to see a pretty damn good cast like this doing a musical...lol

Such a "dream" cast seems to be going to waste. I have my reservations but I'll check it out as soon as I can.

Why not make a deep everyday life kind of movie?

  • Micah | May 11, 2012 11:28 AM

Define "everyday life". In different eras and places, everyday life tends to be different.

If you want an everyday life kinda movie watch CBS or pop down to your local Blockbusters, they have a few.

Cast looks legit, though Erykah looks out of place. The weave, the top hat, the shirt; makes it look kind of campy.

Oh, I'm loving the cast and potential here! Nate Parker and Isaiah Washington are looking quite yummy, I must say! :D

  • LeonRaymond | May 7, 2012 11:33 AMReply

It had to be a short cause Erykah Badu is one of the most difficult persons to deal with on a set but don't ask me ask Téa Leoni for the real deal, watch her eyes roll when you state that name, beyond that the cast is nice!!!

  • Micah | May 9, 2012 3:29 AM

Here's an article on that subject. http://www.contactmusic.com/news-article/badu-baffled-by-brawling-story

Of all the people in the cast Badu is the least documented individual known to cause distress on MULTIPLE sets. 5th and 6th hand knowledge of bad behavior is true because supposedly Ms. Leoni said so? What about Ms. Leoni makes her alleged word truth and what of Badu makes her guilty?

"don't ask me ask Téa Leoni for the real deal" are you that Diary of a Street King guy? Just askin.

@Sergio Badu has been fantastic in 2 movie roles, none of which dregs the ground like Gang of Roses. But to each his her own I'm sure Rosario Dawson and Kelly Hu will make it worth your wild.

  • Sergio | May 7, 2012 4:39 PM

Yeah i was going along with it until I saw that photo of Badu and thought they can't be serious. What is this? Gang of Roses 3?
