Haves & Have Nots

Well, I hope these new Tyler Perry series work for OWN (aka the other black TV network that doesn't call itself a black TV network).

Based on the below first previews, I can say that I'm probably not in the target audience for each; although, given what I do for a living, I'll certainly watch the first episode or three, to get enough of a feel for each of them.

But these first looks definitely tell me what each (until now, secretive project) will look, sound and feel like - the one-hour ensemble drama The Haves and the Have Nots, which is set to premiere on Tuesday, May 28 at 9 pm ET/PT, in a 2-hour pilot; and the sitcom Love Thy Neighbor, which will premiere on Wednesday, May 29 at 9 pm ET/PT, with two back-to-back half-hour episodes.

Leading up to the premieres of the two Tyler Perry serials, OWN will air some special event programming; specifically, on Sunday, May 26, Oprah will sit down with Perry for what the press release calls "an intimate in-depth interview" on a special Oprah's Next Chapter at 9 pm ET/PT.

It will be immediately followed at 10 pm ET/PT by Tyler Perry Comes to OWN: Behind The Scenes, said to be an exclusive inside look at the making of his two new series.

So, lots of promo work there for the premieres.

"We are delighted to celebrate Tyler coming to OWN with these new specials as we ramp up to the debut of our first scripted series," said Sheri Salata, president, OWN. "Tyler's fans, like Oprah's fans, are incredibly connected and passionate. We can't wait for them to see these shows."

And I'm sure those incredibly connected and passionate fans can't wait to see them!

Check out the descriptions of both new shows below, which are followed by video previews:

THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS (Tuesdays from 9-10 p.m. beginning May 28)

From prolific writer, director, producer Tyler Perry, "The Haves and the Have Nots" is a new television drama which follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their opulent mansion set in Savannah, Georgia. From the outside, the Cryer's are the enviable face of success and wealth, but behind the veil, the family's dysfunction threatens to destroy their world of privilege. Cryer family patriarch Jim Cryer (John Schneider, "Dukes of Hazzard") is a powerful judge whose double-life, including tawdry affairs with high-priced escorts, puts his family and political ambitions at risk. His wife, Katheryn Cryer (Renée Lawless, "Wicked"), is the ultimate matriarch portraying a loving and dutiful wife, but she is willing to do anything to protect her family's status. Their son Wyatt (Aaron O'Connell) is a troubled angry jock who cares little for his own image and finds himself in and out of rehab. His sister Amanda (Jacyln Betham), a struggling law student, tries harder to live up to her parents' expectations, but unknowingly has befriended a scurrilous young woman, Candace Young, with the power to ruin the entire family. Hanna Young (Crystal Fox) is the Cryer's maid and the matriarch of her family. Despite having no money, she has found other types of wealth through religion and virtue. She prides herself on her dutiful son Benny (Tyler Lepley), the glue who helps keep the family together. Hanna does have one dark secret, however, her estranged daughter Candace (Tika Sumpter, "Gossip Girl") --- a manipulative opportunist who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. In a bizarre coincidence, Candace is shocked to find out that her newfound friend Amanda's father is Jim Cryer, the very man who has been paying her for sex and who also employs Candace's mother as his family's maid. Armed with this knowledge, the dramatic stage is set for what will be, in Candace's eyes, the opportunity of a lifetime. Other characters in the series include the Cryer's chef Celine (Eva Tamargo, "Passions"), their wealthy friends Veronica (Angela Robinson) and David Harrington (Peter Parros) and son Wyatt's rehabilitation counselor, Jeffery Harrington (Gavin Houston). "The Haves and the Have Nots" is produced for OWN by Tyler Perry Studios. It is created, written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry. LOVE THY NEIGHBOR (Wednesdays from 9-10 p.m. beginning May 29; two back-to-back half-hour episodes)

Written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, "Love Thy Neighbor" is a half-hour comedy set at The Love Train Diner a family run restaurant where every day the menu serves up good food, great laughs, valuable life lessons and a whole lot of love. Diner owner and feisty family matriarch Hattie Mae Love (Patrice Lovely, "A Madea Christmas") has her hands full not only managing her customers but her family drama, too. Her daughter Linda (Kendra C. Johnson, "Phat Girlz") splits her time between Hattie's home and the apartment she shares with her philandering husband. Linda's son Danny (Andre Hall, "Goodbye LA"), a recent college grad, moves into a bachelor pad with his best friend Sam (Jonathan Chase, "Chemistry") and lands a job at a hot internet design firm. He quickly establishes himself as a rising star... that's when he's not distracted by Sam's hard-partying ways and their beautiful co-workers Marianna (Zulay Henao, "The Fighter") and Drew (Darmirra Brunson, "Sunset Junction"). Meanwhile, Uncle Floyd (Palmer Williams, "House of Payne") is an ever-present thorn in the Love family's side. Like old luggage, they can never seem to get rid of him. "Love Thy Neighbor" is produced for OWN by Tyler Perry Studios. It is created, written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry. Not a fan of Dallas soaps, and the Hattie character is a little broad for tv, but if I need a laugh and it happens to be on, I'll take a look.

There was a campaign to move All My Children to her channel (didn't watch that either). Bet it cost twice as much as Haves/Not.

Perry looks like he can squeeze two quarters out of a penny. Can't be frugality in the business.

  • Agent K | May 3, 2013 1:00 PMReply

Ah Pa Kent's in the Haves and Have Nots? I hope he brings in Superman.

  • truth | May 3, 2013 12:40 PMReply

10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag.

  • Xi | May 3, 2013 12:34 PMReply

I just witnessed Oprah's desperation in two 30 second clips. Wow.

  • D.A. | May 3, 2013 9:32 AMReply

The Haves looks like it would compete with 'The Young and The Restless" or something of that caliber. I don't watch those kinds of shows (or 'stories' as my kinfolk would call it). And the second looks like one of his overdone comedies. The only sitcom that remotely sparked my interest from TP was 'Meet The Browns' but that eventually fell flat (Does everybody have to actually cheat in TP's world, sheesh..........but oh well).

  • TYLER, The Creator | May 3, 2013 12:45 AMReply

Fuck this show. Fuck Tyler Perry. And fuck Oprah.

The two richest black people in entertainment are on a mission to set black people back 50 years. And for what? More fucking money? Greed? This is an embarrassment. I'm sure the white execs at OWN and the white execs at Lionsgate are laughing at the expense of the black sheep who tune into this crap and shell out their hard earned dollars to support these two fucks. To those who assume that I'm hating, go fuck yourself. This is garbage. This is mediocre. This fucking sucks.

  • NO BRAINER | May 5, 2013 12:53 AM

"@NO BRAINER, are you sure about that?" -- CAREYCAREY

No. That's why I asked, hence the word "Right" followed by a question mark(?). And thank you for clarifying on your end, because you can only speak for yourself in this situation.

But you want my opinion? My opinion on what exactly?

  • CareyCarey | May 3, 2013 3:38 PM

See there NO BRAINER, there's your answer. Right on cue... that fool is back stomping his feet and voicing his frustration over not being able to support his opinion. He's throwing a temper tantrum because he cannot bring any proof that Tyler & Oprah are on a mission to set black people back 50 years. Me think he's the real scarecrow. And if he only had a brain he'd be a dangerous man.

  • Tyler, the creator | May 3, 2013 1:34 PM

    Dear CAREYCAREY and D.A.,

Fuck off. Two idiots without a brain.

  • CareyCarey | May 3, 2013 1:01 PM

@NO BRAINER, are you sure about that? Is that what you read? Well, I believe you're just throwing me a little bait... but I'll bite.

NOOOOOOOOOOO, that not what I am saying. The gist of my comment was focused on the substance of said opinion. As one reader loved saying "The devil is in the details".

Now, as I implied, when a person gives their opinion, it would behoove them to know and understand that others may be listening to their every word. And, if they give their opinions as if they are facts or omit "incriminating" info, discerning ears might ask them to check their facts.

Furthermore, the one who gave their opinion should not feel uncomfortable (but they will) when their verbiage is brought to the light as poppycock and/or a fool's errand.

So Mr. No Brainer, is that clear enough for you? Give your opinion but....

But fools go where wise men tread not.

  • NO BRAINER | May 3, 2013 11:22 AM

So, basically, D.A. and CAREYCAREY believes wholeheartedly that people should keep their opinions to themselves when those opinions are not the same as their own. Right?

  • CareyCarey | May 3, 2013 10:44 AM

    Great response D.A. I agree.

I am reminded of those other ignoramuses who can be heard saying "It's just my opinion and we all are entitled to one. So I can't be wrong about this" DUH... yes, it's their opinion but they shouldn't get mad when they voice that opinion in an open forum, leading to someone checking that ass when said opinion holds no merit.

I am reminded of a similar issue that has graced S&A's pages, so I'll drop it right here.

"Oprah Will Speak w/ Jason Collins & His Family Together On 'Next Chapter' This Sunday".

Well, many are saying it's nobodies business what Jason does (who he lays down with), but my immediate response is, he brought his business to the street, so he made it everyone's business. And then we hear the mind-boggling comments like this--> "What's with the insistence on boiling homosexuals down to a single sex act? They're not fighting for the right to fuck each other, they want the right to claim their loved ones legally." DUH... EXCUSE ME.. we're not talking about "buddies" and best friends. They are not fighting for their right to have a same-sex next door neighbor. They distinguish themselves from the rest by what they do different than the majority. That is, without question, f***ing someone of the same sex. That's why they are called HOMO-sexuals.

But I understand why proponents of same sex unions try their best to sweep that -- unenviable endeavor -- under the rug. They know it's not common, natural nor healthy for men to enter the backside of another man. Granted, male dogs have been found screwing other males, but they also eat the feces of other dogs, so what can be said about their mindset? Yeah, it's fk'ed up. It's not natural nor healthy to swap anal fluids. That's a discharge chute for waste matter.

So when people open their mouths in response to Tyler Perry and Jason Collin's behavioral habits... letting out some putrid mess, they shouldn't cry foul when someone checks that ass.

  • D.A. | May 3, 2013 9:28 AM

If you can't stand em then why waste your precious little time commenting??? And don't give me that 1st amendment rights crap. You know good and well that Shadow and Act has plenty of posts on other material that I'm quite sure can spark your interest. That excuse was for the ignoramuses who couldn't hold their damn tongue because they 'felt' like saying something not thinking of the consequences. Then get mad when someone responds.

    Fucking retard.

  • Darkan | May 3, 2013 2:03 AM

    My sentiments exactly. Lol.

  • blah, blah | May 3, 2013 12:10 AMReply

The first show looks like bootleg Scandal, meets Robert Townsend's The Bold, The Black and The Beautiful meets a Dowtown Abby rip-off.

  • Kane | May 2, 2013 11:32 PMReply

F*ck it, Tika Sumpter looks good. I'll watch the first one just to see her showing all that leg and ish.

  • Ashley | May 2, 2013 11:20 PMReply

They are gonna go in on that Hattie character and her stereotypical behavior just like they did Mr. Brown but worse. ESPECIALLY if they didn't tone her down from the play version. I was a TP fan when he was underground, but he hasn't grown in over 10 years. Not artistically anyway.

  • Adam Scott Thompson | May 2, 2013 11:16 PMReply

The Bold... the Black... the Beautiful.

  • blah, blah | May 3, 2013 12:02 AM

Dammit! I came down here just to mention that this first show is definitely a rip-off of the Robert Townsend skit - except Perry is serious with it.

  • kandis | May 2, 2013 10:54 PMReply

I knew I recognized the maid, why do they always cast her as a maid though? Eva Tamargo played Pilar in Passions, this seems like a remake.

  • kelly | May 2, 2013 9:41 PMReply

    lord not another scandal wannabe.

  • Curtis | May 2, 2013 9:01 PMReply

LOL @ "aka the other black TV network that doesn't call itself a black TV network." Dang, remember when Oprah's audience was predominantly white women when she had the talkshow? They long gone now Lol.

  • Nadia | May 2, 2013 8:55 PMReply

I can't help but think that when Oprah started OWN she probably NEVER thought that she'd have to come down to this level of shows to support her network. I know making money is all part of the business but surely she has some long term goals for the network's image and reputation. Once she starts down this path, who know where it'll lead. If it's all about making money, then what's stopping her from greenlighting her own version of Basketball Wives or Love And Hip-Hop? The first one looks like a daytime soap opera and the second one looks like one of Tyler's shows on TBS. I was hoping that at least he'd come with something a little different and more original than this for OWN. I'm sorry but with these 2 shows, the Latoya Jackson reality series, the Kim Whitley reality series, and all that drama with Iyanla, I don't know where Oprah's going.

  • Miles Ellison | May 2, 2013 8:46 PMReply

Dallas in blackface and an inferior version of Frank's Place. Yay. Take a bow, Oprah.

  • Rob | May 2, 2013 11:09 PM

This literally made me laugh out loud.

  • truthlies | May 2, 2013 7:37 PMReply

Some are hard to please and some are easy to please. I'm a fan of both TP & OW and I will give them my support by tuning in.

  • Alleycat | May 2, 2013 6:50 PMReply

The Haves and the Have Nots looks like a soap opera and Love thy Neighbor looks ridiculous. I wish Tyler would get inspiration from somewhere else other than his plays and his personal experiences.

  • ScriptTease | May 2, 2013 6:47 PMReply

I hope it's a success. I plan on checking it out for sure. I'm not a big TP or OW fan for that matter, but I will be rooting for the two.

  • TrueBeliever | May 2, 2013 5:39 PMReply

Ok, Tyler Perry is NOT a Christian....why keep writing these types of shows and feeding them to the people...If I had even 1/10th of his studio, I'd be putting out DEEP and RIVETING works that show people The Way....not this way...There is NO evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit in this man. He needs serious prayer and a teacher! He needs to be discipled because once he gets saved, (that's if he's not saved already), he's going to regret EVERY last piece of material he's EVER put out...If he doesn't get saved, he will regret EVERY last IDLE WORD he's written for these actors on the Day of Judgement...

Peace and blessings from our Glorious Messiah who returns very soon-

  • mel | May 23, 2013 11:06 AM

Agree man...agreed. And what a poor reply by Fire, because the oldest book has it so its ok for him to have it? You keep standing for truth True Believer!

  • Fireduprtg | May 3, 2013 5:58 PM

Why? Because he tells stories about people who cheat? Even the oldest book tells stories about that.

The "bad" people usually get their comeuppance in his movies, so I'm missing where he's not spreading the word about it's best to be good.

  • Ci | May 2, 2013 5:04 PMReply

One looks like a damn soap and the other looks like his TBS stuff.

    I don't know, Tyler.

  • dee | May 2, 2013 3:47 PMReply

I will not pass judgment before viewing. Some ppl choose not to watch because its a TP production.

  • NO BRAINER | May 3, 2013 12:12 AM

I'll be watching too, mainly because I already commented and it's only right that I give it a chance before really coming to a conclusion. If it's good, I'll be the first to come back here to recant.

  • Luce | May 2, 2013 8:40 PM

@CARL - That's actually a great way of putting it. Simple.

And this is why my name is Stephen the house negro and will be until a black woman wins an oscar for best actress, not taking it on all fours with someone like Billy Bob behind them or throwing frying pans at black teenage girls heads. Tyler check out the end of school daze. Wakeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Uppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp!

  • ALM | May 2, 2013 2:46 PMReply

Man, I try to be positive, but:

    1. Why do both shows look like they were shot with a home video camera?

    2. Why hasn't Tyler invested in better equipment to shoot his shows?

    3. Why is there always some older woman standing around warning a younger woman about a man "ruining her"? Aren't those the same words from the "Temptation" trailer?

    4. Why does Tyler recycle so much? How many times will the audience hear the same exact dialogue?

  • NO BRAINER | May 3, 2013 12:09 AM

The poor video quality is the first thing that struck me. I'm sure he has a budget for renting the Red or the Alexa. It's really not that expensive.

  • Alex | May 2, 2013 4:57 PM

1.What are you on about? the first looks like how Bold and The Beautiful, Days of Our Lives and the like are all filmed. The second is a sitcom, many sitcoms are filmed without that filmic quality you love so much.

  • CareyCarey | May 2, 2013 2:21 PMReply

A COLOSSAL HIT! Come on now, tell the truth, don't tell me y'all didn't slip a peek at Tyler's "A Madea Christmas". If not, surely you saw the star power of Hattie Mae Love in Madea Got A Job?

Well, I did and I'm here to tell you she'll be bigger than Mr. Brown and Curtis Payne. But for those who grab their heart and cry like Fred Sanford... "hear that Elizabeth? I'm coming to join ya"... don't watch because this will be the big one.

  • Josh | May 2, 2013 2:14 PMReply

Looks like an Upstairs Downstairs skit.

  • Darkan | May 2, 2013 1:57 PMReply

Those shows look horrible!!!! Oprah should be ashamed for putting that trash on her channel. Sdh.

  • RespectTheGrowth | May 2, 2013 1:35 PMReply

So excited that OWN will be delivering some family oriented shows. I absolutely respect the fact that Winfrey supports Perry and vice versa! It is so easy to sit back and critique, judge, and belittle the efforts of others; however, doing something that makes a difference is a major task and one that is not so easily embarked upon my the masses. Kudos to Winfrey and Perry for this stellar accomplishment!

  • CC | May 3, 2013 12:16 AM

Don't y'all get tired of smelling your upper lips. I mean damn, a visitor stops by with a polite headsup, and you guys blast her with that same ol mess.

I'll tell you what, y'all can stay tired and thirsty. That right, you guys can keep piling on the rabbit, but you're not hurting anyone except - yourselves. The smart crowd is laughing and having fun while you guys and gals are stepping on each others pouting lips. Damn, it's a bitch being thirsty, and having an itch you can't scratch, but some folks know the cure while others just cry about it.

  • Adam Scott Thompson | May 2, 2013 11:22 PM

Not to pile on, but a scene from "Malcolm X" comes to mind. Elijah Muhammad poured black ink into a glass of water and said, "If you give this to the people, they'll drink it... if they're thirsty." Then he poured a clean glass of water and declared, "If you give the people a choice, they will choose the pure vessel." I wish it was that simple, but those of us who demand better, well... I think that explains how we feel about it. We can't afford to keep drinking the inked-up water.

  • Ghost | May 2, 2013 6:55 PM

Stop being a sheep! We have become so desperate for anything that looks like us-we accept anything. Stop thinking others are not trying just because they aren't on tv or movies. Maybe the reason Tyler has an easier path is because the product might support the negative images white America wants out there for blacks.
Why is it so hard for Tyler fans to understand that not everyone accepts anything. Some want to see better from Tyler and when Tyler does that-more of us will get on board.
    It's not about Tyler's money.
No one is jealous. It's about can Tyler show growth in his product and the main ones who KEEP him from growing-his fans. If he sits up and veers off his normal formula for a show or film-it's not him quitting on what got him there. It's him growing.

  • Kandiezz | May 2, 2013 3:14 PM

I have to agree with Truth. Sometimes we are so desperate for programming that some will accept anything and applaud it. Anthony Mackie said it a while back, we have the production companies, and film makers to do this. Yet Oprah Winfrey can only come up with Tyler Perry? I suspect its a money issue. hhhmmm

  • truth | May 2, 2013 1:57 PM

Folks like you who support CRAP are one of the main reason black media is shit. Take a bow asshole.

  • NO BRAINER | May 2, 2013 1:31 PMReply

Wow. Both trailers look like *bleep*. I remember seeing the trailer for the soap opera on TV. And Oprah looks like a fool, showing us how uncultivated she really is. You can take the babe out of the 'Bama but you can't take the 'Bama out of the babe.

  • Miles Ellison | May 5, 2013 1:23 AM

It's all about making money. You can talk until you're blue in the face about uplifting, diverse, positive, dignified, or just plain excellent black entertainment, but nobody wants to watch that. Most black people want to watch this.

  • NO BRAINER | May 5, 2013 12:55 AM

You're right, it is business. I notice this all too well. But does she have to make a fool of herself while trying to sell the creative work of a fool? I guess I answered my own question.

  • ALM | May 2, 2013 2:50 PM

I have a feeling that if OWN were doing better Tyler would have bought the TVGuide Network as he originally planned.

Oprah is trying to build advertising dollars. I'm not saying that I agree with her methods, but as RB said, "this is business".

  • rb | May 2, 2013 1:58 PM

It's not Oprah's fault. she has a network to run and keep profitable. So she is running all cylinders as to how to bring eye balls and viewers to her network. It's simply business. Tyler has a built in audience and she needs an audience. So…. *Shrugs*

Yes, it's difficult for black actresses. So when all else fails sign up for some TP bullshit! Cause he's a hires 'tis own!

  • Rocket | May 2, 2013 3:49 PM

Where are the better projects for her? She has to make a living like everyone else. Every black actor can't have a role on "Scandal". It is especially difficult for black actresses. Real talk, her options are pretty limited. And that's a shame.

  • ALM | May 2, 2013 2:47 PM
