For Your Consideration... Focus' "Pariah" Oscar Campaign In Motion

News by Tambay | November 15, 2011 | 6 Comments

So there I was browsing through The Hollywood Reporter's website and look what I saw, animated at the top of the page... take a look at the banner below.

It should be no secret by now that Focus Features plans to push Dee Rees' Pariah as an Oscar contender; I didn't realize that they were pushing in just about every major category... until now anyway.

So, not only is Adepero Oduye (who's smiling face fills the For Your Consideration banner you see) being promoted as a potential Best Actress nominee (what we've long expected), but Focus is also going for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, etc, etc, etc...

As I do every year, I'll revisit this when I do my annual "black Oscar potentials" list in January or so.

For now... bravo to Dee Rees, producer Nekisa Cooper (whom I met for the very first time over the weekend), and the rest of the crew and cast. We're certainly all rooting for you over here, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this campaign shakes out in the end, when nominees are announced early next year.

I shall be rooting for them too, having met Adepero Oduye at the Toronto International Film Festival, she was just so kind. The film was also great, definitely my favorite of the few I was able to see at TIFF because it was just so well rounded from drama to comedic. The whole cast...phenomenal!

Haven't seen this yet but it'd be neat if they at least get a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
