Judge Mathis

He's not exactly the first name I'd think of if I was asked what public personality whose life I'd like to see a TV series built on.

But it's happening, thanks in part to Ellen DeGeneres of all people. Maybe she's a fan, and I'm just not aware.

A scripted TV comedy series based on the life of Judge Greg Mathis has been put into development at Warner Bros TV and Ellen DeGeneres' company, A Very Good Production.

Fox has picked up a script commitment for the untitled project, which will be written by brothers Todd Jones and Earl Richey Jones (Johnson Family Vacation, In Living Color), and will follow the life of a thug-turned-judge who is in full control of his courtroom, but has zero control over the 4 children he's raising at home with his wife.

Mathis, once a gang member in his youth, turned his life around after ending up in jail, and his single mother was diagnosed with cancer.

And yes, he has 4 kids, just like the character in the potential series.

Mathis, DeGeneres, Todd and Earl Richey Jones are all executive producing the project.

I am curious to know what this show will look and sound like. I hope that it I a witty and intelligent show and not like "Love That Girl" or "The Rickey Smiley Show."

My only question is: Will this be in the ilk of The Bernie Mac Show? Also, how are they presenting his past gang lifestyle? Flashbacks, old acquaintances, or in lectures? It sort of makes me hope this maybe a dramedy.

He has set the stage, so to speak, for a reality show for years. He discusses his past and current life on the show all the time. Looking forward to it!
