Haves & Have Nots

You've seen a teaser; now here's the first full trailer for Tyler Perry's new OWN series, the one-hour ensemble drama The Haves and the Have Nots, which is set to premiere on Tuesday, May 28 at 9 pm ET/PT, in a 2-hour pilot;

Read the description for the new show below, which is followed by the trailer:

THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS (Tuesdays from 9-10 p.m. beginning May 28)

From prolific writer, director, producer Tyler Perry, "The Haves and the Have Nots" is a new television drama which follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their opulent mansion set in Savannah, Georgia. From the outside, the Cryer's are the enviable face of success and wealth, but behind the veil, the family's dysfunction threatens to destroy their world of privilege. Cryer family patriarch Jim Cryer (John Schneider, "Dukes of Hazzard") is a powerful judge whose double-life, including tawdry affairs with high-priced escorts, puts his family and political ambitions at risk. His wife, Katheryn Cryer (Renée Lawless, "Wicked"), is the ultimate matriarch portraying a loving and dutiful wife, but she is willing to do anything to protect her family's status. Their son Wyatt (Aaron O'Connell) is a troubled angry jock who cares little for his own image and finds himself in and out of rehab. His sister Amanda (Jacyln Betham), a struggling law student, tries harder to live up to her parents' expectations, but unknowingly has befriended a scurrilous young woman, Candace Young, with the power to ruin the entire family. Hanna Young (Crystal Fox) is the Cryer's maid and the matriarch of her family. Despite having no money, she has found other types of wealth through religion and virtue. She prides herself on her dutiful son Benny (Tyler Lepley), the glue who helps keep the family together. Hanna does have one dark secret, however, her estranged daughter Candace (Tika Sumpter, "Gossip Girl") --- a manipulative opportunist who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. In a bizarre coincidence, Candace is shocked to find out that her newfound friend Amanda's father is Jim Cryer, the very man who has been paying her for sex and who also employs Candace's mother as his family's maid. Armed with this knowledge, the dramatic stage is set for what will be, in Candace's eyes, the opportunity of a lifetime. Other characters in the series include the Cryer's chef Celine (Eva Tamargo, "Passions"), their wealthy friends Veronica (Angela Robinson) and David Harrington (Peter Parros) and son Wyatt's rehabilitation counselor, Jeffery Harrington (Gavin Houston). "The Haves and the Have Nots" is produced for OWN by Tyler Perry Studios. It is created, written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry. Ok, I'll give it a chance. However, it looks a lot like "The Family that Preys" and "Scandal" reduct. Hopefully if this show gets picked up, Tyler or Oprah will put a little extra money in the budget for better hair and wigs.

  • Lucy | May 8, 2013 8:55 PMReply

oh crap thats whats her face Crystal Fox from in the heat of the night.. dressed as a maid.. I wondered what happened to her after that show was over...

  • Nadell | May 7, 2013 2:20 PMReply

TIKA SUMPTER! That'll be the reason I tune it! She's gorge! She's been on my radar since OLTL. I never watched Soap Operas but got awareness of Tika on YT w/ clips from OLTL.
Yes, this does look like a telenovela....our daytime shows but I never actually expected anything brilliant from Perry - even w/ the partnership w/ Oprah. But I will give it a chance.

"The bitch set me up." Didn't Marion Barry copyright that slogan?

  • Melissa | May 7, 2013 12:39 AMReply

    tika looks gorgeous!

  • Rocket | May 7, 2013 12:17 PM

I'd check an episode just to see her.

  • jeftcg | May 6, 2013 9:01 PMReply

This reminds me of that old Telemundo soap (or is it Univision), "Un Camino, Dos Mujeres", a horribly written and acted show that lasted for one simple reason: all the curvy latinas wore tight-fitting, revealing outfits. I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I tuned in faithfully. Tyler Perry should take a page from that playbook, but honestly, between him and Oprah, the only boobs on this show will be the people watching it. Comedic drumbeat...aaaaand out.

  • Ava | May 6, 2013 9:44 PM

Haha. I remember Dos Mujeres, Un Camino, but I was so young I didn't know any better. I just remember the woman with the impossibly blonde hair and everyone mentioning Erik Estrada (lol).

Well dang, what is the point of support black filmmakers when they're cranking out the same crap as white companies, but with a lower budget? If we can't depend on black filmmakers to tell a variety of stories about black people, then we are screwed. Tyler Perry, stop putting your name on everything, it's not like the stuff is any good. Remember there's no: Steven Spielberg presents Jurassic Park, and that man is a legend.

  • Charles Art | May 8, 2013 2:59 PM

    Well said !!!!!

  • | May 6, 2013 4:08 PMReply

i smelled wackness the minute i seen Tyler Perry & Oprah names on it...

  • Daryl | May 6, 2013 2:28 PMReply

It's good to see two black people get together and do something . On the other hand you have to ask yourself why do rich black people in hollywood keep offering the things the powers that be do. We always talk about diversity of the black experience but when we get money we turn around and do the same stuff that hollywood has been offering black folks forever. It's like too many of us don't believe black folks will be accepted in different stories other than comedy, over the top drama, gangster stuff or the other stories will not make money so this is what we have to do.
Tyler Perry has his own studio and Oprah her own network but they offer nothing different then the big 4 media companies. What's the point of getting there if it doesn't mean nothing. The black audience has to start demanding more from filmmakers and rich black people and stopped supporting them just because they black because if you keep doing that they will keep doing the same thing and black entertainment gets stuck in the same place.

  • ScriptTease | May 7, 2013 9:34 PM

@V I totally agree with you. Black folk need to think outside the box, and stop trying to deal with black issues. We have enough black issues just by being black. When I see a movie, I want to live vicariously through someone else, for get about my on personal struggles. That being said, I am an Aspiring Screenwriter, trying to do just that.

  • V | May 7, 2013 2:51 PM

I agree with you 100%. I think black Filmmakers really need to stop making "Black" Movies etc.. and just make a good, interesting and creative movie.
We as black people have accepted Mediocrity as Greatness and what we put out is suffering. Yes we now how the money ie, Oprah, Tyler etc..; however we are lacking in imagination, creativity and execution. We are not competing at all with other film makers who make creative movies like, The Matrix, Inception, Avatar, What Dreams May Come, Cloud Atlas, or TV Shows like Nurse Jackie, News Room, Dexter, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire etc.
We continue to again tell the same “BLACK” stories over and over. If we can start to just start creating Great stories and think outside of our own Neighborhood while having an amazing group of Black actors, I think we will then at least get on the same playing field as the likes of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas etc… BLACK PEOPLE OPEN YOUR MINDS BEYOND YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD!

I second that Amen for Daryl, and I like that show idea STHN ... is that something you're working on? I'd definitely watch it.

  • STHN | May 6, 2013 3:15 PM

Imagine it! A show about a married black mom raising her daughter. Her daughter is bullied, the husband is LOYAL but trapped in a job he doesn't care for. A brother, who is a cop, is tired of the all the corruption in his department. He goes and does something about it. During all this he finds love. Oh, I'm sorry, those are positive depictions.

How about we have a S & A Harpo post. We all post letters to Oprah and send them to her damn website. I've had enough. Have you?

  • ALM | May 6, 2013 2:44 PM

    @ Daryl: Amen

  • Marie | May 6, 2013 2:28 PMReply

Oh. My. God. I should've known this was going to be bad just from the photo. Maid uniforms? Really? Is it supposed to be a soap opera? Because it's written, acted and shot WORSE than a soap opera! How can someone so "prolific" show absolutely zero improvement in every basic storytelling skill? And will TP ever learn the definition of SUBTEXT?!

  • Lady Quiet Storm | May 6, 2013 1:22 PMReply

I like what I've seen so far, instead of being so critical ppl, open your minds see something different! Support Tyler, dang.

  • PRINCESS | May 29, 2013 8:05 PM

Mr. Perry is doing and outstanding job in writing ,producing ,as we'll as acting
Helping black ,s as well as white community to have chance to soar .GOOD JOB

  • ALM | May 6, 2013 2:43 PM

I think that's one of the issues. Is "The Have and Have Nots" really any different from what we as television viewers have already seen?

This trailer looks like much lower budget, much lower quality version of "Scandal" plus "The Young and the Restless". He's the governor for goodness's obvious that TP is trying to pull the "Scandal" audience in, but "Scandal" is a completely different show.

There also needs to be a conversation around the fact that Tika's character is the painted as the stereotypical jezebel. Of course the man has no option to resist her, so it's all her fault. She's painted to be the immediate villain of the show. That's really messed up when you think about it.

  • Adam Scott Thompson | May 6, 2013 12:57 PMReply

LMBAO @ :21. I'm confused. Is this is a soap opera? I'm asking.

  • Adam Scott Thompson | May 6, 2013 7:21 PM

Ha! They should've gone full-Townsend on this one. Nothing but over-the-top, comedic "trailers" a la "The Bold... the Black... the Beautiful." I would watch a half-hour of those joints.

  • sosgemini | May 6, 2013 1:36 PM

:44 takes the cake. "I've been doing my research. Who the hell are you?"

Ummm, maybe you need some better research. SMH

  • Phill | May 6, 2013 12:48 PMReply

    I can't.

  • NO BRAINER | May 6, 2013 12:46 PMReply

Typical of a Tyler Perry piece to have some older woman telling the young woman that whatever wrong she is doing it's going to backfire. DUN-DUN-DUUUUUUN! Hey, it's a TP thing.

  • ALM | May 6, 2013 2:39 PM

Nobrainer.....I said that last week. LOL

  • Adam Scott Thompson | May 6, 2013 12:58 PM

The hushed slave tone just screams, "You told Harpo to beat me."
