Somewhere In The Middle
Earlier this year, in the spring, we featured a Kickstarter fundraising campaign for Lanre Olabisi's second feature film, titled Somewhere In The Middle. The campaign successfully raised over $100,000, which is a rare occurrence for an independent non-celebrity-backed project (to raise that much money via crowdfunding; typically, successful campaigns range in the $10,000 to $30,000 range).


Olabisis's feature film debut was 2007's August The First, highlighted on the old S&A site. The film premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and was nominated for a Gotham Award that year. It's streaming on Netflix by the way.

His follow-up to that film, Somewhere In The Middle, which is currently in post-production, is described as follows:

Somewhere in the Middle charts the interconnected lives and loves of three New York City professionals. It weaves in and out of three seemingly disparate, disconnected relationships, re-telling the same events from varying perspectives. Layers of relationship, motivation and emotional dishonesty are peeled away as the characters struggle with love, sexuality, insecurity, and infidelity until all of the involved parties are left on entirely new and unsteady ground.

The film is based on improv work by and with the New York Independent Film Collective, a multicultural consortium of both emerging and seasoned professional artists - filmmakers, screenwriters, actors and producers - dedicated to the task of creating at least one new film per year. As their website states, the narrative of that film will be built through a collaborative, improvisational process between actors and writer or the writer/director, which is essentially the process via which Somewhere In The Middle was made.

A new behind-the-scenes video has been released by the team, featuring the film's cast and crew during production, talking about their respective roles, processes, working together, etc.
