Grace Jones

I have to confess that it literally ticks me off whenever I hear anyone praising or making a lot of fuss about Lady Gaga, when, in fact, EVERYTHING she does she stole from Grace Jones. And even worse she does it very badly.

Grace gets NO credit for being out there, doing her fierce thing long before this Gaga broad was ever born. And yes, Madonna is just as guilty of being a copycat too.

And to prove her point that no one messes with Ms. Jones, as well as to to teach these pathetic copycats a lesson, check out her performance of her hit Slave To The Rhythm, at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert earlier today, in front of Buckingham Place.

And remember, Grace is 64 years old.

Yeah and Little Richard dont get credit for nothing.

Haha. Grace Jones-- still a baddie after all these years! I saw it live online and I must say, Ms. Jones still has the power to enthrall the audience. A lot of pop stars today pretend to not give a fig what people think, while remaining self conscious about their image. Grace Jones really doesn't give a toss about what people think about her looks, her music, her image or her motives. Much of what she does seems to be just because she can and the audience is along for the ride.
And Shirley Bassey also looked amazing, although I wonder why she only performed one song.

Loved Grace's performance. Not sure how she concentrated with the hula hoop and singing live at the same time. Amazing Grace.

One of the few highlights in what was generally a very boring show. Apart from Stevie Wonder and Annie Lennox. What Will I Am was doing I have no idea.

She was AMAZING! I had to grab my iPad to look up how old she is because it's unbelievable that she can still pull off an outfit like that - and hula hoop! Go on girl with your bad self! (Dame Shirley Bassey was pretty amazing too.)

Slave to the Rhythm was appropo as she danced and sung for an old dusty Slave owning bitch. To think society hasnt grown out of use for Kings and Queens. Like Grace always especially for the skin she's in but i do not admire performers. Especially us performing for them.

yeah she was great amazing looking for 64 and still relevent but maybe she should have worn something a little more conservative in front of the qeuuen just becuase you CAN wear that doesnt mean you should! but im just glad the jubilee is over the bbc fawned all over her its was literally sickening

  • Logic | June 6, 2012 11:40 AM

Grace Jones can wear whatever she wants, where ever she wants. Why should she change her signature style for some rich old lady who did nothing, aside from be born, to earn her status? Long live Queen Grace!

Isnt it bad for a black person to use the word 'slave' in any capacity?

  • BluTopaz | June 6, 2012 6:28 AMReply

Bowing down to Queen Grace. All the musicians look they are having a great time, too. Lady who....

Gimme a break!!! Everybody complains about how nothing is original anymore. When Amber Rose, one of the most useless celebs on the planet imitated Grace Jones' iconic photo, not only was it unoriginal, but a desperate ploy for attention, non-artistic, and disgusting. I didn't see any of you mention that in your commentary. Having seen Lady GaGa in concert, she is a brilliant performer, singer, entertainer. Lady GaGa has actual talent!! I don't think Lady GaGa has ever said she was not influenced by Grace Jones who has influenced so many. Who isn't influenced by what came before? All you lovely people get out there and make a song or a dance move or a movie that is completely without influence from anyone else and see how you do? Rare creatures you would be indeed.

Now with all that being said, yes, Grace Jones still brings down the house and is the bomb! I cannot even imagine trying to do all that at once!

@Deniece. You are obviously a Lady Gaga stan. Good for you. Yes, people have made comments on how No-Talent-Amber Rose swagger jacked Grace Jones style as well as Can't- Sing-Out-of-a-Wet-Paper-Bag-Rhianna. We know that Grace is the Original. However the reason why people have a problem with Lady Gaga was the patronizing, condescending nature of her invitation to Grace Jones. What she did was the typical younger white mainstream pop artist condescends to the older (out of flavor)Black trail blazing artist. Grace Jones verbally bitched slapped Lady Gaga and put Gaga in her place. Quiet as it's kept Lady Gaga stole from Bjork (fucking great artist) as well as Roisin Murphy. Both artist are white and Lady Gaga stole their style. IMO, the only thing unique about Lady Gaga visual style is that her outragoues outfits they look ill fitting on her. She can not knock out that diva look in her outfits the way Grace Jones, Bjork and Roisin Murphy can. Her costumes overwhelm her presence. Maybe it's intentional.

A magnificent perfomance by Ms Jones. She wows the crowd, and I say
she originates and the others imitate.

  • Deneice | June 6, 2012 1:05 PM

Yes, I am a Lady GaGa fan and a huge fan of Bjork (never question my loyalty to Bjork). I recognize Lady GaGa's talents, but it seems no one else wants to at all. I don't think she was condescending, but that is just me. I think you read way too much into that invite." The white mainstream artist condescends to the older, black, out of flavor artist?" Seriously??? Rick Rubin anyone?

Also, no one made comments about Amber Rose in reference to this article is what I meant.

  • Solaam | June 6, 2012 1:42 AMReply

How do you hoola hoop and sing at the same time without being winded? At 64? Wow.

  • Orville | June 5, 2012 10:59 PMReply

There is an article online from the British newspaper The Guardian they did an interview with Grace and she dissed Lady Gaga. Grace said Lady Gaga wanted to work with her but she turned her down. According to Grace she prefers to work with artists who are original.

  • LeonRaymond | June 5, 2012 10:54 PMReply

Well I am sorry to say, She is the Queen of style on stage and no one knows how to get everyone rocking from Gay to straight to Transgender , and she and Donna Summer ruled the disco era and Grace always had the head bumping slamming jams. Grace is road all these sad copy cats came from LADY GAG ain't shit Just look at Grace. They called that Old school but what is it is is REAL SCHOOL!

  • Derek | June 5, 2012 10:51 PMReply

THANK YOU for finally saying it! Gaga has done nothing but copy what Grace Jones did YEARS before, with much more presence and style. At least Nicki Minaj readily confesses to ripping off Grace.

  • Steven Flores | June 5, 2012 10:29 PMReply

Holy crap, you're right. Lady Gaga did rip off Grace Jones. Jones is way cooler than Gaga. Who in the hell would do amazing covers of stuff by Iggy Pop and the Normal. Plus, she has way more personality than Lady Caca.
