According to Matt Mueller of Thompson on Hollywood, filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro is a big fan of Idris Elba and his work.

She states that Del Toro is a "massive fan" of Elba's Stringer Bell in The Wire but it was his work in the BBC detective series Luther than convinced him that Elba was perfect choice for the major role in his upcoming sci-fi film Pacfic Rim.

She quotes Del Toro as saying about Elba and Luther that “the presence Idris has is almost like a supernatural gravitational force. Literally objects start moving when the guy enters a room. He’s an actor of uncommon power and uncommon humanity… Javier Bardem is another one. They’re like Rodin sculptures. They represent pure humanity.”

GDT is loyal to his actors in a way that say... David Goyer can only dream of.

Seems like most movie fans and Hollywood Execs are waiting for someone else to tell them if someone is any good. Well there you have it. Guillermo says Idris is good. You can stop checking everyone else for conformation.

@Jug Yeah. LOL. That sh*t is worse than the Michele Bachmann Newsweek cover. LOL. I wasn’t co-signing what the cat was saying just pointing out how someone can make a statement (ludicrous statement?) in support of their star.

Having said that, as someone who has studied acting (as a director) for about 10 years, I can say Idris Elba HAS gravitas that a lot of actors DO NOT have. Lots of stars play leads in films, but not everyone is a TRUE LEAD. Even young stars like Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and John Boyega (Attack the Block), have it. Even after seeing George Clooney headline a couple of films I brushed him off, but after seeing him in Michael Clayton, Up in the Air and the underrated, but EXCELLENT The American I can say he is DEFINITELY A Leading Man. Even if Hollywood tries to put people in starring roles many of them do not have that what it takes, that je ne sais quoi.

"Maybe Hollywood is pushing Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling because they are better actors than Idris Elba. Reynolds and Gosling are also a lot hotter than Idris Elba that’s for sure."

    I'm sorry but...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Ryan Reynolds is both overrated in the looks and acting department. Gosling is a strong actor but hotter than Idris? Nah, I don't think so! Idris is superior is acting talent and screen presence...he also a man's man. In comparison, Reynolds and Gosling, are still playing in the little league.

Oh and if you haven't figured it out, I agree with Del Toro!

    @ Orville

WOW Elba is 40 and so he's too "old". Anyone 40 or over is worthless in your eyes then. I might as well jump out a window since I'm too old for you - you young punk

Love what you said @Dankwa...the gravitas thing. YES. Also agree with you on Clooney. Though I haven't seen "Up In the Air" or "The American", I thought "Michael Clayton" was fantastic. There's the one scene with the horses on the hill that really impressed me. Not that he said anything (or that the horses said anything o_O) but that scene was pivotal in so many ways and reminded me of another favorite film/director's work...

    I hijack and I digress.

I love Idris. I love his name. I love his look, his presence. And I even love Del Toro's fanboying 'Dris and Bardem. Modern-day Rodins? Oh stop it, you silly, infatuated director-man, you. *blushes for the actors* LOL Objects moving. Pfft! You speak as if these men are gods, or demi-gods or fantabulous actors or something! *bats eyelashes* They kinda are magnificent aren't they? *le sigh*

Maybe Hollywood is pushing Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling because they are better actors than Idris Elba. Reynolds and Gosling are also a lot hotter than Idris Elba that's for sure.

I saw Idris in that Beyonce movie Obsesseed and he was terrible. Idris is unattractive and he's old to too.

I think Anthony Mackie is a better actor he's younger than Elba but he's not cute either. I kind of wish Usher would continue acting he has starred in a couple good movies and he is very attractive.

I don't see the big deal about Idris Elba he's kind of old the guy is pushing 40 and he is definitely not attractive either. I think it is kind of sad there are no 20 something or early something black male actors that are good actors and attractive. The media seem to be pushing Idris Elba hard but there is just nothing sexy or interesting about him.

LOL @AccidentalVisitor. I just think it's a director hyping his star for the most part. Much like this quote-

"You’re going to see Tyler Perry like you haven’t seen him. He’s 6’5″, he is a linebacker. He is an awesome physical presence and is just going to tear it apart here. It’s an intense, dramatic role.” - Bill Block, CEO of QED International (District 9), which acquired the rights and the initial script to 'I, Alex Cross'.

Having just seen 'Luther' a couple months ago I can say that while Stringer Bell was my favorite character on 'The Wire' his acting in 'Luther' was by far leaps and bounds past what has arguably got to be his most famous role to date.

@Dankwa-Have you seen the latest cover of Ebony with TP on it?

Sorry, dude is still soft LOL

While really I dig Idris Elba and I'm happy for his success...What about all of the untapped black male actors in their 40s that will never get to shine because Idris and Will Smith are only ones Hollywood seems to think exists? We could name tons of Caucasian male star actors in their 40s, how many can you name that are black? Or even American born for that matter? Hmmm, lol.

Geez, get a room already, Gulliermo.

  • Vanessa Martinez | August 10, 2011 11:52 AMReply

I have to agree with him 2!

  • Jug | August 10, 2011 11:48 AMReply

Not a bad way to be described huh?

    Good shit!

  • Mecca | August 10, 2011 11:21 AMReply

Idris Elba has the whole package. I don't know why Hollywood continues to supply us w/ boring white boys like; Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, Alex Pettyfer etc.

    Ugh!

  • Neziah | August 10, 2011 10:25 AMReply

    I agree with him!
