Luther Shoot 3

Some may prefer that Luther be romanced by Alice (played wonderfully by actress Ruth Wilson) - those who've grown to love Alice and her deliciously maniacal ways, almost as Idris' Moriarity, we could say; alas, it won't be that kind of likely dysfunctional relationship.

Instead, Luther (Idris Elba) will be take by a character played by Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil) in the hit series upcoming third season/series, which, as we've already noted, will comprise of 4 hour-long episodes, which began shooting last week, to the excitement of many.

In season 3, Luther finds himself under a lot of pressure, as he struggles to solve two conflicting crimes, while simultaneously fending off a ruthless ex-cop who's determined to bring him down by any means necessary.

Sienna Guillory's character will be called Mary, and she's described by the BBC as... "a worker in a vintage clothing shop, who meets Luther by chance." What happens from there, we'll have to wait to find out.

Also revealed are that Warren Brown, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Dermot Crowley and Michael Smiley will return to assume the roles they each played last season.

And next seasons guest stars will include Lucian Msamati (Game Of Thrones fans will remember him as the pirate Salladhor Saan; he and Nonso Anozie were the 2 black Brits who joined the series cast last season), and Ned Dennehy (Tyrannosaur).

No date announced yet on when Luther, season 3 will debut, in the UK or the USA; but I expect it'll be sometime in 2013; and maybe even simultaneously this time - meaning, those in the USA won't have to wait months after it airs in the UK, to see it in the USA.

After watching season one and episode 2 of season 2 and finding out that Idris is being seduced by yet another Caucasian in season 3, I've decide to not watch any further. Sorry Idris I loved you in the wire and I think that you are sexy as hell, but if I continue I will start to dislike you for being so weak. Come on back across the water.

  • Curtis | February 15, 2013 5:40 PM

I hope you're boycotting Scandal as well with your logic, because it's the same thing happening in reverse.

  • Me | February 15, 2013 5:26 PMReply

Love Idris, but have to say weak in this show. Are there any good looking black women that wanted to play a par in this? Would love to see this man with an Afican American.

  • WhiteRabbit | November 28, 2012 12:47 AMReply

In the 1960's "Anti-racists" forced ALL and ONLY white countries to open their borders to non-white immigration. Then "Anti-racists" forced ALL and ONLY white people to "integrate" or face penalties for being "naziswhowanttokill6millionjews." Now "Anti-racists" are calculating that ALL and ONLY white children will become minorities and eventually EXTINCT. If "Anti-racists" did this to ALL and ONLY black countries, it would be called a genocide. "Anti-racist" is a codeword for anti-white.

  • mawon | February 15, 2013 7:51 PM

    Ugh, go away.

  • Ayo | November 27, 2012 3:50 AMReply

We have a really peculiar double think thing going on in the UK. Many people talk about the tyranny of political correctness, and about how far we've come as a society; as if racism was wiped out along with the plague. If you call attention to a lack of minorities on television/film or if you call attention to another stereotypically "post-racial" interracial pairing (also see light skinned black women and white men) then you're a fascist social engineer.
However if you look at depictions of minorities like Luther, they are never ever allowed to be in relationships with anyone that looks like them. Ever. But white folks have carte blanche to be with white folks and everyone else.
I think it's unhealthy for us to completely shut down this debate right now. It's obscene that I can't think of an onscreen couple from my country involving two black actors. Misfits went there for a while then completely went along with this trend, as though Curtis is allergic to black women or something.
Despite my inward groan at his love interest being white I am very much looking forward to new Luther. :)

  • AliceMorganLover | November 26, 2012 11:50 PMReply

I want Alice back! She was the best part of Luther - Wilson expertly played her as this lovable, intellectual, damaged (and of course sexy) psychopath, a great TV character and foil for Luther. Bring her back ASAP!

  • troy | November 27, 2012 12:43 AM

yes the greatest foe to the black man is the white woman. Which is used to make the black male weak, fighting with women.

  • Orville | November 26, 2012 7:03 PMReply

I don't see the big deal if Idris Elba has a white love interest big deal. I can't see why anyone would upset about it I feel sorry for the actress that has to make out with that mutt. Idris Elba is not attractive I don't see his appeal and he's an overrated actor. Give me, Michael Ealy, Henry Simmons, Anthony Mackie, deserve higher profiles and they are better looking than that too.

  • ALM | November 27, 2012 8:47 AM

@ Orville: I like Mackie. He is very charming, but you are not going to convince hardly anyone that Mackie is hotter than Elba.

  • Troy | November 27, 2012 12:45 AM

haha, give yo ass shit you are just one lame ass consumer. Nobody deserves tailor made mass market entertainment unless you pay for it like Michael Jackson.

  • FutureDiplomat | November 26, 2012 11:06 PM

    "Idris Elba is not attractive"

  • Leathe | November 26, 2012 6:36 PMReply

A-K87, it sounds racist...but I understand where Kat is coming from.

Kat is probably off-handedly referring to standards of beauty in America and by extension in the entertainment industry. Granted, Luther is a BBC production, not an American product. Still, globally the standard of beauty still is white, aquiline nose, blue eyes, blond hair, etc...and Black women are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Not to say that Black women are not attractive...they are, hell, I'm sexy and I know it. But I think there's something to be said when you can stand back and look at 1) how many Black women are cast as love interests and 2) the types of Black women cast as love interests...meaning how much more closely they resemble a European standard of beauty mandated in the entertainment industry.

Then, there's another issue that I have noticed and why I don't think a Black actress is likely to be cast as a love interest for Luther...that will constitute a "Black" show. The idea of a "Black" show or movie is something that Will Smith has discussed in interviews. He has grown frustrated about it...there's too many politics surrounding casting in the US. Academic research has been conducted on it too...anyways I didn't mean to blab or go off topic but you will notice alot of productions with Will Smith and his love interest is Latina. Casting a Latina acts as a buffer instead of casting a white female lead (fears of miscengenation) or a Black female lead (2 blacks equals a Black movie).

  • troy | November 27, 2012 12:49 AM

That's something they we own the pimping of the black female image. They gave it back and now we are mad because black women arent pimped on the boob tube as much as white women. So now we have ratchet black women television to fill the void hollywood has left us by not pimping the image of black beauty.

  • Anne | November 26, 2012 6:28 PMReply

I think Idris Elba is a fab actor. I almost flip when I saw him in Luther after that great role in Wire. So glad he was the lead and Luther is an intelligent series. Glad it is back.
I want Mr Elba to be the next Bond. Can you imagine....better then Alex cross by far. So come on my British friends lets start the chant Idris Elba for James Bond 007. Lets get it out there

  • mawon | February 15, 2013 7:56 PM

@Troy Hasn't Bond been all over Europe already too? Why couldn't he go to Africa? I'm sure he didn't go to the whole continent.

  • Troy | November 27, 2012 12:51 AM

Where do we use a black man as a typical spy that is not supposed to be noticed other than a few of the same places Bond movies have already been made. America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Hey maybe he can just remake Live and Let Die

  • A-K87 | November 26, 2012 4:26 PMReply

@Kat, do you understand how Racist that sounds? Why does a black character who lives in a multicultural society where black people make up approximately 2% have to have a black love interest. Your comment makes you seem extraordinarily ignorant. Let's just be thankful that this show is back on. I highly recommend the prequel book to series 1, "Luther, The Calling" written by the creator, Neil Cross.

  • mawon | February 15, 2013 7:50 PM

    You shut up too, Troy.

  • Troy | November 27, 2012 12:54 AM

what is their to sellout the preneanderthal subsaharan black community. There has never been anything to sellout cause there has never been unity. Only sects/gangs--the black church/back to africa/tribes. No unity whatsoever who is getting soldout if none of you are for me and Im not for you.

  • Libby | November 26, 2012 6:26 PM

    Oh shut up. Sellout.

  • Nicole | November 26, 2012 11:57 AMReply

    Looking forward to season 3!!!!

@Kat: Then you will NEVER support the show because that will NEVER happen. And if you've watched any British based detective shows you would know that this is the formula. I think Tambay wrote an article about the type of love interest normally cast with black male leads.

Besides, this is the last season. Then the movie. And don't expect a black love interest there either.

    Just enjoy the show people.

  • Kat | November 26, 2012 11:14 AMReply

I will support the show when/if he gets a black love interest!

  • Me | February 15, 2013 7:01 PM

    Excuse me. My point exactly.

  • Me | February 15, 2013 5:27 PM

    My point exactly

  • ALM | November 27, 2012 8:48 AM

@ Troy: Most of the commenters on this site want to see Black women on tv in a positive light. You seem to believe there is a secret conspiracy to portray Black women as prostitutes/drug addicts on screen.

  • Troy | November 27, 2012 12:58 AM

That is the point a lot of people secretly want to see a black woman get sacrificed on television. It is like advocating for a production to use black showgirls knowing that they will just end up coke whores as if that is an opportunity black women are missing out on.

  • Ava | November 26, 2012 4:10 PM

Have you seen what happens to Luther's love interests? If he does eventually end up with a Sister (seems they're going through the spectrum right now), I hope she can manage to stay alive! On this show, the odds won't be in her favor.
