NBC never did pick up the women's prison drama pilot Bad Girls - an adaptation of a UK series - that Jurnee Smollett was a star of.

But the young actress has locked in 2 other TV jobs, including the previously-mentioned role as the daughter of Phylicia Rashad’s character, in NBC's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish thriller, Do No Harm, as well as today's  reveal - that she'll be joining the cast of HBO‘s True Blood during its upcoming sixth season.

Ms Smollett will play Nicole Wright, described as "wide-eyed... who is not concerned with money and more concerned with the common good and doing what’s right."

This'll be a series regular role for her, by the way.

True Blood‘s sixth season is scheduled to begin in June.

Smollett will next be seen on the big screen in Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.

I'm a fan of Journee Smollet, but not a fan of True Blood. If this is what she wants to do, I hope it goes well.

Good for Jurnee. Some may disagree, but I rather she be cast in "True Blood" than that prison show. I mean...really? Prison? I'd rather see more Black actors and actresses working in SF/Fantasy/Horror genres than prison/inner city genres. I just wonder if this will be less face-time for Rutina Wesley (Tara)? She has been the only Black Woman on "True Blood" as a regular cast member for the last five years. The only other Black Women have been Adina Porter (Lettie Mae, Tara's Mother) and Tanya Wright ( Deputy Kenya) but, those roles are intermittent. In fact the only other Black person who is a regular cast member is Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette.) We'll just have to wait and see. As far as nudity...Rutina has never done a nude scene. We'll have to see what they might have in store for Jurnee.

@TROY-- "Her nudity may not always show cause she is dark skinned . . ." Really, dude? C'mon, son.

  • Troy | January 26, 2013 9:06 PM

Rutina got her back blowed out by Mechad Brooks in the scene where everybody was having sex in the woods. Her nudity may not always show cause she is dark skinned but she definitely has been butt naked on the set.

I'm glad she's working. I wish it was on a better show.

Tambay - I'm begging you. Can you please start filtering the comment section? You've got to get rid of some of these 'Seagulls' who comment on your site. Seagulls are people who come to your site, crap on it..then fly away. The comment section is here to engage readers and give good, constructive criticism or an interesting point of view. But I find that there are too many commentors on this site who only provide belligerent and mean spirited advice. These comments add absolutely no value to this site or to the cause.
True Blood is a top rated and very popular show. This can open doors for Jurnee and give her more opportunites. Can't we just be happy for Jurnee. Geesh, people!! Even if you don't like the show or it's not your cup of tea, just be happy for the girl.

I hear you re: some of the sillier, being-negative-just-to-be-negative comments. I don't want censorship though because it IS their right to say what they want. Just ignore and don't entertain them. Congrats to Ms. Smollett. Brooklyn, stand up! ... https://twitter.com/IvoryJeff/status/293859857881251840

Can't wait for the new season to start! I think she's a great addition, and this show will really allow her to stretch her skills.

  • Miles Ellison | January 21, 2013 11:33 PMReply

This show is trailer trash vampire porn. I doubt that this improves it in any significant way.

  • ALM | January 21, 2013 8:59 PMReply

Since I don't have premium channels, I've never actually seen a full episode of the show, but I have heard that the content is borderline porn. My first fear at hearing this news was that they may try to make her take her clothes off. Based on the character description, that hopefully won't be an issue.

YAAAAAASSS!!!! It's about to be off the CHAIN!!!!! Bontemps on fiyaaa!!! *Crosses fingers, hoping she'll be a "sup"*

As a faithful fan of TRUE BLOOD who's already eagerly anticipating the new season, let me say that now I'm DOUBLY excited! This is a really good look for Jurnee!

I am so glad she's getting more work. It's disgusting how someone who can give a performance like she did in The Great Debaters not get cast in things left and right. I don't watch True Blood, but it's a popular show and it'll give her more notoriety. Here's to Jurnee getting more roles from now on.

  • Nikki | January 21, 2013 7:27 PMReply

    Is she really that talented?

  • BeautyIAM | January 21, 2013 9:32 PM

    Yes, she is.

  • j | January 21, 2013 6:11 PMReply

Shes too talented for this show true blood is horrible even a talent like hers can help make it better.

  • Steph | January 22, 2013 7:53 PM

In my Asian voice "she cuda don betta".

The first season of TB was pretty good, but every season thereafter has been lacking bigtime. I stopped watching halfway through season 2 to be fair. I only watched here and there after that, but I may check out her episodes.
