The last time this project and its cast were discussed here was back in November of last year at the old site; when Tambay reported Faith Evans would portray singer Florence Ballard in her big screen biopic. At the time, Taraji P. Henson was also rumored to have been offered the role of Diana Ross. Well now, it looks like both Evans and Henson are out of the picture.

Blondie: The Florence Ballard Story will be directed by Todd Turner, according to the film's imdb. It currently shows as "in production" with Jurnee Smollet and Solange Knowles credited as "rumored" to star in the roles of Florence Ballard and Diana Ross, respectively.

Blondie is the story of when "The Supremes were the most successful female vocal group in history. Only Florence Ballard, the spunky teenager who founded the group, has remained silent. Until now."

The film will be produced by Spirit of Life Films and shot in Atlanta, GA. Florence Ballard's daughter, Michele Ballard-Chapman, will serve as co-producer.

There is no further information on the rest of the cast as of yet.

More updates soon to follow.

AT THIS POINT WHO CARES WHO PLAYS WHO. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I THINK IS THE TRUE STORY BE TOLD ABOUT POOR FLO. DIANE ROSS JUST TELLS LIE AFTER LIE. MARY WILSONS BOOKS WERE GOOD AND THERE WAS ANOTHER GUY THAT WROTE CALL HER MISS ROSS RANDY SOMETHING. HE TOLD THE TRUTH TO. AND I HOPE POOR FLOS' KIDS GET SOME MONEY OUT OF THE MOVIE ALSO. FROM WHAT I READ, THEY ARE ALL ON WELFARE.WELL FOR ALL THERE MOTHER'S HARD WORK AND SHE ENDED UP GETTING SHAFTED IN THE WORST WAY BY ASS-HOLE BERRY GORDY AND FLO'S LAWYER, I WISH HER KIDS THE BEST. AND ALOT OF SUPREME FANS LOVED FLO THE BEST ANYWAY. GOOD LUCK WITH THE MOVIE. I HOPE IT HAPPENS. I LOVED FLO.

Although I like Jurnee Smollett...she is wrong for the character. Florence was a beautiful and curvaceous woman. Jurnee is too skinny to play a woman who was known for that. Faith Evans is not too old to play Florence. She has the voice, look and curves and is a great choice. Even Florence's twins thought she was perfect. I don't really see Taraji Henson as Diana...but maybe that'll work. Kelly Rowland would be perfect as Mary Wilson. Why is Solange even brought up in this conversation?? What part would she play?? The idea that she would be considered for anything is all wrong.

I NEVER THOUGH THAT FAITH EVANS WAS THE BEST CHOICE FOR THE FILM. THIS YOUNG LADY SEEMS TO BE MORE OF A FIT. I CAN'T DWAIT TO SEE THE MOVIE.

  • L. Taylor | May 18, 2012 9:22 PMReply

Sorry Faith isn't playing her but vocally, I think Jill Scott would've been superb.

  • J.Jones | March 12, 2012 6:21 PMReply

Jurnee is the bomb love all her work. I follow her pretty closely. I even heard she was going on R.Kelly's Love Letter Cruise in October. Anybody heard that? Whats this all about?

  • Jackie | January 11, 2012 5:54 PMReply

Come ON is just a film what holding up the process . I want more info I think Jurnee is excellent choice she's young and have facial features of Flo.

Stop In The Name of Love, before you break my heart...I would have Suzanne de Passé and Mary Wells produce the movie. Suzanne did a great job on the "Temptations" in working with Otis Williams, that it's only fitting her and Mary produce "Flo"

  • LORENZA | May 29, 2012 11:10 PM

Suzanne works for Motown and Motown istn't gonna give a fair depiction of Flo since Berry Gordy was the owner at the time and was the one that dismissed Flo from the group. Besides Suzanne was not with Motown at the time Flo was with the Supremes.

Mary Wells Died in 1992 I think you mean Mary Wilson

  • Ray B. | November 23, 2011 2:58 PMReply

This looks nothing like Florence, Faith waz their best pick an waz approved by her daughterz.

  • EA OROURKE | April 25, 2012 3:47 PM

FAITH Evans is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too OLD to be playing a teenager, dawg!!!

  • Lorielle | September 4, 2011 6:23 AMReply

I think that Jennifer Hudson would make an incredible Flo Ballard. Taraji would have been a great Diana Ross! JHud's strong voice is reminds me so much of Flo's strong vocals.

Now let's get Jesse L. Martin to play Marvin Gaye and Beyonce' to play Tammy Terrell.

They look so much like these people.

I recently saw the movie N-Secure with Essence Atkins and I recognized right then and there that she had all of the makings to be Diana Ross in this film. She has the perfect look and is a strong established actress. Nothing against Solange Knowles, I just think that if you are going to portray an icon such as Diana Ross, you need to have the best actress who has the right track record acting wise to pull it off. Solange is still relatively new when it comes to acting. I think that this film is too important so the casting must be the best that it can be to represent.

  • Bettye Jones | August 10, 2011 4:13 AMReply

I , too hope this isn't another SLAG Diana Ross film. A Berry Gordy production would best tell the true story of the group. While Faith Evan would be the best choice for Florence. Since Solange is a die hard Diana Ross fan she would certainly give a good performance. Tarajii is too brass. Kelly Rowland as Mary Wilson and Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Berry Gordy.

  • EA OROURKE | April 25, 2012 3:50 PM

Berry Gordy is an image maker and a creator of imagination and facade. He builds fantasies, not truth. Therefore, he could NOT tell the story the way Florence Ballard's family can. And since that B-Word Diane usurped the group leadership, too bad if she's portrayed in a bad light, with her fake hair, fake ass (it is fake) and fake voice!

Hey im interested in putting my song on the Sountrack for this movie... here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jdMVrtldWE RIP Florence Ballard...

  • glenn tomlinson | August 7, 2011 9:58 AMReply

i hope this is not goin to be a LETS SLAG DIANA ROSS film the thoughts of mary wilson coming out of the woodwork spreading more venom will surely put people off the film... shes done well for a third rate backing singer already with 2 books

Jurnee would be a perfect choice for the role of Florence Ballard. Her acting is amazing. She is one of the best young black actresses in Hollywood. I believe she can do the late Florence Ballard justice. She might have to gain some weight and she can lip-sync to the original recordings.

Solange to play Diana Ross. I don't think so. She might need a little more acting training to play a role like this. But Essence Atkins, I would love to see her play Diana Ross. Essence looks just like Diana and she have the acting chops to play her.

Kelly Rowland should play Mary Wilson. Also, Cuba Gooding Jr should play Berry Gordy Jr., Charlie Murphy should play Tommy Chapman, who was a former chauffeur for Motown and Florence's husband/manager, John Legend should play Smokey Robinson, who helps the Supremes audition for Berry Gordy and Motown, and Anika Noni Rose or Jazmine Sullivan could play Cindy Birdsong.

I think that they are making a terrible mistake with casting. Although I love Jurnee and think she is beautiful and amazing, I don't know if she can sing, but I do believe that Faith hauntingly resembles Florence Ballard. Solange, I don't know about her acting, I really don't care for her, but if they are going to cast Faith, they may as well cast someone near her age and that would be Taraji to play the role of Diana or one of Diana's own daughters, Tracee, Chudney, or Rhonda. Tracee has the eyes, mannerism, as does Diana's other daughter Rhonda, eyes, and they know her stage presence and who she is, although, depending on the story line it may cause conflict of interest. Essence Atkins I think looks like Diana Ross. Tanya Blunt, who played in Sister Act, who sang with Lauryn Hill can definitely play Mary Wilson. Also, speaking on the lines of Diana Ross, Lauryn Hill could play Miss Ross as well. The pouting lips and she can act. These females would draw a crowd to the film. So I''ll have to wait and see how this pans out.

Your Comment Keep in mind that the Supremes were young girls in their teens and early twenties when they were famous. A younger actress is better suited to plosy Flo. Faith was too old.

  • SueQ | August 4, 2011 5:01 AMReply

Solange acted in the movie, Johnson Family Vacation".

  • LeoVutton Ballard | August 4, 2011 4:32 AMReply

Can my single "Walk on By" be featured on the soundtrack?

  • biopic_guy | August 3, 2011 5:43 AMReply

Okay let's see Jurnee Smollet is beautiful, very pretty BUUUT for Florence Ballard i'm just not seeing it call Jurnee when you do the Martin Lawrence biopic and she will be PERFECT for Tisha Campbell. Now, as for the part of Diana Taraji would be pretty good but i think she would be alot better for the Tammi Turelle biopic. I think either Keshia Cole, Antonique Smith or Eve would be good for her and Diana, okay, call me crazy but for some reason i like Lauren London for the roll :) if not Lauren then i think they better go "no name" it's too bad they didn't do this like 16 years ago Kim Fields would have been great as Diana

  • tae | August 3, 2011 4:10 AMReply

faith should play Florence because she looks to much like her and can sing her ass off

  • James Madison | August 3, 2011 4:04 AMReply

I like Jurnee. Definitely a quality actor.

  • misha | August 3, 2011 4:03 AMReply

I don't know about Solange but I'm a fan of Ms. Smollett so if true, I'm all for her in this role.

  • andrai | August 3, 2011 3:07 AMReply

Faith was an excellent choice as Florence, body type, look, and voice... on point.., acting??? (maybe thats where the notes fell off the staff) but Jurnee as Florence???. she would make a great diana ross, body type and the acting skills to pull it off but Florence? no... unless she gains weight for the part. ooooh boy! thats the right tempo.

  • Ciara Gee | August 2, 2011 12:50 PMReply

Darkan, agreed. Taraji, because of her eyes and skin color, actually looks like Diana Ross to me in some moments. Perhaps Solange has the acting chops to do it, I guess we won't know until we actually see her give it a try since we have no previous films to go on. On one hand, I understand why they wouldn't select Taraji because the original Supremes' members were in the group from their teens to their early twenties and Taraji doesn't look fresh out of her teenage years though I think she could cover the twenties and I'm sure they want the same actress for Florence's teen years and twenties so I could see how Taraji wouldn't work. On the other hand, I wish they'd just pick someone new to the art scene period who looks more like Ross, yet still matches whatever their age requirements are.

  • darkan | August 2, 2011 10:45 AMReply

Taraji would be perfect casting for Diana Ross. Solonge who?

  • Tamara | August 2, 2011 10:14 AMReply

Wow. Out with the old, in with the young(er). Jurnee=yay! Love her. Solange=Diana? Umm. Okay! All rumor? Boo. Let it be, for Jurnee at least. Let it be. :-)
