Kerry Washington Speaking

Well, at least on the day she hosts, we know who'll probably be playing most of the black women characters written into any skits during that episode.

Via press release from NBC, on November 2, Kerry Washington will make her Saturday Night Live hosting debut. That's right, it'll be the very first time she's ever hosted the late-night variety series, likely due to a surge in her popularity thanks to the hit show she stars in, Scandal, which she was nominated for an Emmy Award this year.

Eminem will return for his sixth appearance as musical guest, with his new album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, set for release on November 5.

Has SNL ever spoofed Scandal? I'm not a regular viewer of the comedy show, but I'd assume that, with Scandal's growing popularity over the last year especially, it would be on Lorne Michaels' short list of TV shows to spoof on SNL.

If it has been, who played Kerry Washington's character?

They definitely have not spoofed Scandal, or likely any Shonda Rhimes show; too diverse for the SNL players.

No black woman has EVER hosted SNL and, certainly, the popularity of the show is the only reason she's been asked to now. The few women who have been asked to host, in the past, are heavyweights in Hollywood. It's interesting how this comes on the heals of Kenan Thompson's TV Guide interview. Seems like a very calculated, shrewd move on Lorne Michaels' part. ... Since SNL has become such a lame show in the past 20, 25 years it doesn't mean anything, one way or another, for Kerry's career.

She was recently a guest on "the Jon Stewart show," which is far more flattering, in comedy circles today, than being on SNL. I'm sure there will be an uptick in their ratings that week based on the curiosity factor.

I'm pretty sure Latifah hosted once.

  • Sergio | October 16, 2013 2:58 PM

And I remember that Cicely Tyson episode too, back when SNL used to be funny

Evidently more facts that Mr. Factchecker didn't bother to check

Wasn't Queen Latifah do double duty hosting and the musical guest back in 2004?

No Whoopi on SNL. My brother corrected me and said she was never on. Darn it! I hate it when his memory is better than mine!

  • Akimbo | October 16, 2013 2:28 PM

    Janet Jackson in 2004.

  • onyx | October 16, 2013 2:22 PM

Forgot to add that Maya Rudolph (Minny Riperton's daughter) also hosted back in 2012 and Whoopi Goldberg hosted back in 1998 (I think that was the date)

  • Onyx | October 16, 2013 2:15 PM

Cicely Tyson was a host also in 1979.

Just thought I'd post where the episode could be found. I saw the show. It was quite funny back in the day. has the link. just add /title/tto694921/ after (dot) com/

Hey Factchecker if you checked your facts then you would know that Gabby Sidibe hosted SNL back in 2011

Hopefully Peeples wasn't a clear indicator of how funny she can be. She makes for one hell of a dramatic actress, but comedy I think escapes her talents. Though hopefully I am mistaken.

I am very annoyed with Lorne Michaels and the lack of diversity in the snl cast. How many black women have ever hosted this show? Most of their skits aside from news update are super lame and unfunny but good for kerry I guess :-/.

  • Regretful SNL Fan | October 16, 2013 11:21 AMReply

It definitely has not been! Probably mainly because they don't have anyone to play her lol. If they did spoof it, it'd probably be Nasim Pedrad since she's the only woman of color on the show and has played Nicki Minaj, etc. in the past.
