Lenny Kravitz Will Play Katniss' Stylist In "Hunger Games" Adaptation

As we reported here back in April, Lenny Kravitz was being sought for a role in the upcoming adaptation of The Hunger Games series of books. Although, at the time, there was no information on what roles he was being offered.

Now there is!

Lionsgate (via The Playlist) announced yesterday that the musician-turned-actor will play the role of Cinna. Just don't ask me who exactly that is, because, as I've said before, I haven't read the books, so I'm not at all familiar. But according to the Hunger Games, Cinna was Katniss Everdeen's stylist during her campaigns through the 74th and 75th Hunger Games."

So there ya have it... Kravitz is Katniss' stylist. Not sure how much of a part the character plays in the overall scheme of things, but maybe those who have read the book can chime in.

As we already know, Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence is playing Katniss, and Josh Hutcherson will be Peeta. There was some backlash over Lawrence's casting, as the character in the novel is described as having “dark hair” and “olive skin;” but Racebending has all the details on that matter if you want to catch up (HERE).

Last we reported on this, the characters named Thresh and Rue, also known as Tributes, were cast, and both are played by relative newcomers, Dayo Okeniyi, and Amandla Stenberg.

Thresh and Rue are definitely African American in the book, as I've read, so the casting here hasn't caused any ruffles.

Filming is set to begin around towards the end of May, in North Carolina, under Gary Ross' (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) direction. Apparently, there are still many roles left to cast. But how many?

OMG!! this makes me want to see it even more(the movie) yea, Lenny's perfect for Cinna. Perfectly Perfect.

Knowing nothing about the book or what Cinna "should" be, I'm happy they cast a black actor. That said, Lenny?! What is it about the exactly ONE movie role where he disappeared on screen & the one tv appearance, playing himself, that was equally as forgettable, is making folks run to the Kravitz camp?! He was one step from Andrew Young in SELMA... Guess I missed that memo :-(

    Accidental Visitor's Op-Ed was right....

This. This is wonderful and amazing and the fandom is having a collective conniption fit on the Internets ( ie. "Cinna's not BLACK!" but that's just too bad.

He's gonna rock this part and he's perfect. He's got Cinna written ALL over him. This was a brave move on the part of the filmmakers.

Also Stanley Tucci and Woody Harrelson are perfect choices as well. And although I still think a young woman of color should have been chosen for Katniss, I am convinced that Jennifer Lawrence will do a great job. From what I've read, she's a fan of the books and has a great handle on the part.

I'm so excited for this movie and the whole trilogy.

Yeah, I'm excited about the casting of Rue. She's an adorable little actress.

I agree with Geneva Girl. The character has an important role in the development of the main character. There is little emphasis placed on race in the book, so I've been pleasantly surprised by the casting. Particularly of Rue, who is also crucial to the story and Katniss' growth.
Class separations are much clearer in the book. Cinna is from the capital where there is wealth and status and ridiculous fashion choices (such as blue skin dye and gold tattoos) so fashion wise this is right up Lenny's alley, lol. But the character has a great story arc in that he goes from this surface of frivolity to showing his true feelings about the Hunger Games and the Capital rule.

WOW!!!! I didn't envision this character as black nor was he described as such in the book. Yipee!!! This makes up for some other dubious casting choices, e.g., Jennifer Lawrence. I am excited to see this movie and now even more so.

This character, Cinna, is instrumental in Katniss' success in the games. He sticks around through the third book which is great for Kravitz.

It's going to be a very interesting film. Woody Harelson is an inspired choice. It should be fun.

    Terrific news.
