Louis Gossett Jr. has been cast as Halle Berry's father in CBS' new Steven Spielberg-produced futuristic thriller series Extant, which debuts on WednesdayJuly 2, at 9/8c.

The series will center on a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family, after she returns home after a year in space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately change the course of human history.

Vague, but sounds like it could be epic, as only a Steven Spielberg series can be!

Of course Halle is playing the astronaut.

Gossett will play her good-natured but unreliable father - a retired doctor living out his last years in an isolated community, which keeps him out of touch with the rest of the world, including his daughter and her family.

Goran Visnjic, Grace Gummer, Camryn Manheim and Michael O'Neill will also star in Extant.

"There's only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career," Spielberg said. “As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her.

Halle Berry added: "I'm always on the lookout for amazing roles and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium. For five months a year I'll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I'll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one. I've found amazing partners in CBS's Nina Tassler and Les Moonves, and the incredible Steven Spielberg, along with his Amblin production team, whose vision and creativity in storytelling is unparalleled."

The script was penned by Mickey Fisher, who will executive produce alongside Spielberg, Greg WalkerBrooklyn WeaverJustin Falvey and Darryl Frank

Halle Berry and Lou Gossett on television sounds like good watching. Spielberg is an intriguing part of the mix.

Guess I have to break it down for you... look up the word TRAILBLAZER. Then read my comment again.

Perhaps the Shonda reference is because this will be the 3rd series starring a woman of color: Scandal, Sleepy Hollow and now Extant. Certainly the success of Scandal has been a catalyst for casting.

I didn't see the word "Trailblazer" in this either. What the hell are you talking about and how does Shonda tie into this? Shonda, is that you? Girl, where's my 20 dollars? All that money and you still duckin me.

  • Oh Please | March 10, 2014 10:05 PM

Two Oscar winners. "The Shonda Rhimes Effect" is slowly changing the landscape of network television. Yo Shonda! Let's take it to the big screen. You got the juice and the talent.

I didn't see Shonda's name mentioned anywhere in this article.
