So what will Lupita Nyong’o do next? What will she do next? What? What? WHAAAAAT? Tell us!

A question that's been at the center of numerous articles and debates (on and offline) since she won the Oscar earlier this year.

The celebrated actress just might be joining Forest Whitaker and Jake Gyllenhaal in Antoine Fuqua's boxing drama Southpaw.

The Weinstein Company project, penned by Eminem (who was originally set to star in the movie, before being replaced by Gyllenhaal) and Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, will tell the story of a left-handed welterweight boxer who becomes a champion, before experiencing tragedy that negatively-affects the life of his young daughter, and who later finds the determination to make a comeback.

Whitaker will play a character named Titus ‘Tick’ Willis, a former fighter forced to retire after losing an eye. His plans to return to the sport, but as a trainer, are derailed after his son is killed.

Rachel McAdams will play the female lead (likely Gyllenhaal's love interest).

And, assuming she does join the cast, Nyong'o, who is being courted by the film's producers, will play a social worker whose job is to ensure the fighter's daughter's healthy well-being.

Yay - another film about a distressed white fighter making a comeback.

Production is eyed for this summer.

Ms Nyong'o most recently joined Idris Elba in what is being envisioned as a live-action/CG hybrid movie adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, which is currently set up at Disney, with Jon Favreau directing.

Nyong’o will provide the voice for Rakcha, a mother wolf who adopts Mowgli, the story's main protagonist.

But she's Hollywood's new "it girl". SMH. You wanna know who is the new it girl, Margot Robbie. She has shit lined up. I wanted the best for Lupita :( I'm pissed.

Whatever the case, the window of time for "we need to see more" vs. "I have an Oscar" is closing pretty soon. Somebody has to blink. Yet none of this touches the reality that her color will instantly stunt the imaginations in Hollywood anyway.

Sorry--I put my comment in the wrong place so repeating it here:

Gemm, Yes, producers can judge with auditions--but it wouldn't be surprising to me if her agents want her as offer only--that is, no auditions. At the level Lupita is now operating in, roles are often given not based on auditions, but on the desire to work with a given actor/actress based on their prior body of work.

Seriously? Producers can "judge" Lupita with AUDITIONS.

Margot Robbie may not have been a household name, but if you look at her imdb page, Wolf of Wall Street was not her first job. She has previous credits in TV both here and in her native australia. Whether you are a fan of hers or not, she has different roles (I don't know how actually varied they are, of course) in addition to WOWS from which producers can judge her for additional projects.

I'm sure lupita will be fine. If whoopi can get work so can lupita

Sorry Beemooree, I meant my post to be for the above section. I too think Lupita will be just fine. She will definitely get work. She's the rare true overnight sensation, when it comes to acting.

Gemm, Yes, producers can judgewith auditions--but it wouldn't be surprising to me if her agents want her as offer only--that is, no auditions. At the level Lupita is now operating in, roles are often given not based solely on auditions, but on the desire to work with a given actor/actress based on their prior body of work.

It's official! Hollywood has NO IDEA what to do with Lupita. SMDH.

Actually Bondgirl, Jennifer Lawrence had quite a few credits before her first oscar nomination..for the lead for Winters Bone, btw. Check her imdb page. She had small roles in 3 films in 2008, she was on a tv show from 2007-2008. And guest roles on shows before that. Even after winters bone she had *supporting* roles in a couple of duds before she got xmen and hunger games. She did not jump out of nowhere to oscar and then from that to xmen/hunger games.

  • Bondgirl | May 15, 2014 10:45 PM

@Mocha: Jen Lawrence had no credits to her name either after her Oscar nom (she didn't win btw), so explain how she got XMen & Hunger Games all from work in Winter's Bone. I really hope Lupita has projects she's negotiating on that just haven't been announced yet.

Actually, if she is good in this (as I am sure she will be), she will be able to show range. At this point, although, yes, she did win the Oscar, she has no other real credits to her name. Before Hollywood can decide "what to do with her" they need to see more of what she can do.
