His name is Thelron Pleas, he's 18 years old, and the folks down in Georgia are making comparisons between him and Tyler Perry.

First, they both live and work in the state of Georgia, and both have the same initials T.P. But that's not all, 15-year old Pleas is also a playwright, with 5 plays already on his resume (I'm not sure if the other T.P. was that young when he wrote his first play, so the kid might have the man beat).

And another thing, like T.P. the man, T.P. the boy writes plays that have a Christian message, which resonate with his core audiences of mostly church-goers; AND, like T.P. the man, T.P. the boy is a multi-tasker, writing, producing, directing and acting in his plays. Though, from all I can tell, there aren't any men or boys in fat suits and wigs involved.

Thelron, who wrote his first play in 2009 at just 15 years old, claims to have done so after watching a Tyler Perry play and being inspired.

"God really spoke to me and said, ‘You can do that, and do it better,’” the young Pleas states.

Whoa! The confidence in this one... :) He can do what Tyler does, and can do it better. You hear that Mr Perry? Little dude is calling you out!

Thelron's plays have titles like Don’t Look Back and Stay, You Betta Keep It Mov’n,, Family! Gen 49???, Thru It All I Am Convinced, and When It’s Time, It’s Just Time.

And his audience comes in all colors, he says: “So many different people come: white, black, with money or without. All of the different people have to deal with different issues, and they are all ministered to in some way. Each play deals with many issues; I don’t write about just one topic, because I have a diverse audience.

Pleas' 5th play will be presented this Saturday at the Douglass Theatre, 355 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in Macon, GA. Tickets are $20 at the door ($15 in advance).

After this, he'll be headed to Morehouse College in the fall, after winning the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship, where he plans to study accounting. However, don't let that fool ya; he has no plans to stop writing plays. You see, this accounting thing is mostly so that he can become business savvy too, just like the man who inspired him, the other T.P.

As he states, "I’m not closing the chapter on it, as people say. People ask why I’m not majoring in theater. I’m learning now what I’m doing wrong, what I’m doing well and what not to do next time. I hope to learn how to operate a business and do all of the budgeting. These productions can be very expensive.

So there you go people! This sounds like a kid we should be watching. The next-generation Tyler Perry in the making. He's started early, getting his pimp game down, and I can only imagine where he'll be in another 10 years, when he's 28.

Don't be surprised if we're next announcing that some film producer has optioned the film rights to one of Mr Thelron Pleas' plays :)

Look out TP, there's a new TP in town and he's gunning for ya!

You can read a profile of Thelron on the Macon.com website HERE.

Just from the headline of him claiming he's better than Tyler Perry, my response was WHO AIN'T?

  • BluTopaz | July 25, 2011 7:33 AMReply

Sorry you have to deal with that Carey. Your son's lucky to have you taking care of all that for him.

Yeah you're right, the kid has plenty time to mature into his life path. Hell i'm still trying to do that myself and I won't lie, i have called on Him when in true dire straits . I do envy people with total faith but I'm not there yet.

  • CareyCarey | July 25, 2011 7:05 AMReply

I here you Blu, and I guess we'll stay divided on "Christian" messages. That term can mean a lot of things. It's not always about "preaching". A message can be delivered in subtle ways.

But again, the Kid is 18, so just like Q,T., he has time to develope and change his mind on his career path and goals, just like 75% of all college students.

On a side note, I wish I could change my mind about being a father because I just got a call from my son who was picked up for probation violation (he's going to be there a while). Yep, and now he calls ol'dad to pickup his car from the inbound in Iowa, while he sit in a cell in Illinois. The cost.... 250.00 bucks and counting... 35 dollars a day. So, I'll talk to you later. I am off to do my daddy thang. Yeah, and I have to go by his house to get it straight. Dang... where is my Bible. :-)

  • BluTopaz | July 25, 2011 5:24 AMReply

@Carey--you need to go back and read the article:

"...the boy writes plays that have a Christian message..."

And also look up the word "ministered" --you'll see words like clergy, religion, church. Same thing when you look up Bible belt. And yeah it's a large niche but again, let's not pretend this kid has indicated here his plans to be a filmmaker who can successfully cross genres which is what QT is. Right now Theron's tapped into a large racket, i mean market and piggybacking off Perry while insulting him is not only tacky, it's unprofessional but i know Perry ain't worrying about this youngin.

he also said: "God really spoke to me and said, ‘You can do that, and do it better" -so God is his co-director as well huh?

  • CareyCarey | July 25, 2011 4:56 AMReply

@ Blu, the following is an assumption on your part and maybe the fuel that feeds many of the comments.

"If Thelron is targeting his flicks to the Bible belt then he is simply fulfilling a niche market, just like any strictly action/rom-com/porno director"

Blu, who said he is targeting his flicks to the "Bible belt" (whatever that is)? Listen, I see that type of comment all the time... "Tyler's movies are for church folks" and it's woefully incorrect. Those types of remarks are cop-outs for people that cannot concisely voice their concerns about Tyler's movies, . There are very few Christain messages in Tyler's movies, and that's a fact. In some of his movies there are NONE!

Just because this kids said Tyler was his inspiration says little about his future goals. Besides, if you're implying Tyler fits a niche market, I'd say it's a pretty large niche.

re: "[Tarrantino]knows film history and has a full grasp on storytelling through different genres"

    AND?!

Are you saying this kid can't follow the same path? You do know the age of Q.T., when he broke out and his path?

  • BluTopaz | July 25, 2011 4:24 AMReply

    @Carey:

As much as i dislike Tarantino, ita with the comment he "went to films". He knows film history and has a full grasp on storytelling through different genres.

If Thelron is targeting his flicks to the Bible belt then he is simply fulfilling a niche market, just like any strictly action/rom-com/porno director.

  • BluTopaz | July 25, 2011 4:12 AMReply

"All of the different people have to deal with different issues, and they are all ministered to in some way"

Don't they still have churches down in Georgia?

  • NothingButAMan | July 24, 2011 8:31 AMReply

    lol @ PB's comment!!! I completely agree!!

  • Junebug | July 23, 2011 12:49 PMReply

I like how God told the kid "Man, fuck that other nigga! Gone get your shine, little homie!"

  • Suite Lady | July 23, 2011 11:50 AMReply

Study the craft. Respect it. There are rules. You can't just make ish up and think that's how it's supposed to go. All these "hallelujah" plays are a horrible example of theatre and you have people who have never seen a professional play thinking that's how it's supposed to be done. NOT. Study and take a playwriting and directing for the stage class from seasoned professionals. There is a formula. Learn that and let that inform your own style. This young man may be saved if he has the right training. He could at least minor in theatre.

  • darkan | July 23, 2011 11:43 AMReply

    Carey, that's too funny!!!!

  • CareyCarey | July 23, 2011 6:25 AMReply

@ Zeus, Ooooh now you want to continue to cuss me! Okay, now, since the terms of engagements have yet to be written, I’m gonna half to hit you in your sweet spot, and I think you know what I mean? Yep, others may not know it, but I know your sexual preference , so please don’t kiss me in the morning. Now I am not going to call you all those homophobic names (because I have gays in my family) but I think it’s time to hit you with my best shot. See, you started this mess by calling my name and cussing me, so I have to get the ball out of my court, and throw it back in yours.

**stealing a few lines from Harlem NIghts**

Darkan: Zeus, why did you feel it was your place to call the man out? The man didn't say nothing to you until you called his name, so come over here and sit down and shut the fuck up!
Zeus: You shut the fuck up, Darkan. I would tell you to kiss my ass too, but you probably can't find it you blind motherfucker.
    Darkan: Fuck you, bitch.
Zeus: [ turning and looking at Carey] Me and you got to step out back.
Tamara: Hey, it was just a misunderstanding.
Zeus: [Zeus starts taking off her hat] nuh-uh, No it ain't, it ain't no misunderstanding. Carey just accused me of being a Tyler Perry Hater. and if you gonna take up for Carey in here, we can all be some fighting motherfuckers in here this evening. Bring your ass, nigger. Bring it on. Come on. Bring your ass! Come on, get up and come on, motherfucker!
Carey: All right, bitch, you want to fight? We can fight then, you fat motherfucker, l'm tired of your shit!
    Zeuz: Just bring your ass!
Carey: Zeus, put that gay magazine away!
    [pulls gun]
Carey: I ain't playin' games no more. You put that fuckin' thang away or I'll blow your goddamn pinky toe off!
Zeus: Oh! Now you're gonna shoot me in my pinky toe.
Carey: I'm not playing with you. I will blow that little black, gnarled crusty, dead motherfucker the fuck off your foot! That’s right, your pinky toe and your pink pantie hose, I gotta give you something you can feel,

Sugar Ray: Ok, break it up in here. We know the same fellas who are going to drop salt on Tyler Perry every time we mention his name, so I want somebody on them. Carey, do you have a girl?
Carey: I've got a girl who's pussy is so good, if you threw it up in the air it would turn into sunshine. Zeus, get over here.
    [Zeus looking surprised]
Carey: You know we tally up at 4 o'clock. What is your problem?
Zeus: Kiss my ass, Carey. I've got to watch these magazines until the last trick is gone. And I'm not about to ask no customer to roll over so I can turn one damn trick. Now, this is your place, but I am in charge of this here thang of mine... and you can just kiss my ass.
Carey: You're gonna be the nine-toed-havingest-limpingest bitch in Shadow and Act if you don't stop fucking with me. Now put the magazine and your pecker away. And you better start asking someone before you let yo mouth over-load your weak ass.

Darkan: See there Zeus, I tried to tell your dumb ass. But noooooo, you had to hit Carey with “Dem’s fighting words!!! LOL!!!”

  • darkan | July 23, 2011 6:06 AMReply

Damn Carey Carey. Zeus got in that ass!!! Dem's fighting words!!! LOL!!!

  • Zeus | July 23, 2011 5:42 AMReply

    Carey,

Your typical temper tantrums when folks give their opinions on TP is getting old. Ya boy's work is not loved by everyone. Deal with it and stop crying the usual bullshit about 'hating.'

No one is killing this kids dream. they are saying aim HIGHER.

    So calm the fuck down.

  • CareyCarey | July 23, 2011 4:57 AMReply

Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum. I smell the blood of hatin ones. Be he living, or be he dead, they’re grinding this boy before he’s feed.

I cannot believe grown ass adults are killing this kid even before he gets out of the gate. That makes little or no sense to me.

Niggas and flies I despise, they’re always on some bullshit.

Hey, has anyone heard of Quentin Tarantino? I don’t think he even finished High School. In fact, when someone asked him if he went to film school, he said: “"When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them, 'hell no, I went to films”

So, most of y’all need to talk about something you know, and stop hating on our rich and famous, especially our young black youth. That’s right, if you don’t stop smelling your upper lips, and do your own thang, you might drown in your own tears.

    Yeah, I said it,

  • CareyCarey | July 23, 2011 4:23 AMReply

"A good friend of mine here in my small/large town is the TP of Christian Gospel play productions. He’s in the process of doing big things in terms of an historical theater we have in the town…. He has drive and energy and more drive. I see that in this kid, so seriously good luck to him"

Thanks Tamara, it's nice to know that some people are viewing this with an open mind.

  • CareyCarey | July 23, 2011 4:14 AMReply

Yeah Darkan, I see the silly rabbit is back *lol*. Yeah a fox smells his own stankin hole, so now the little boy Zeus has appeared with his pissy hands and spitty face . But fighting with Zeus is like hitting a midget with a brick. So watch this...

"Carey, your typical temper tantrums when folks give their opinions on TP is getting old"

Is that right Zeus, a temper tantum? Surely you can do better than that. but I'll tell you what's old and sad, folks that give what they term as " their opionion" and then cries like a homo when someone calls them on that bullshit. Yeah, everytime Tyler's name is mentioned, you and many of the freaks come up iout at night and up in here with that some old tired drag. What, your dick must get hard when you talk silly while mentioning Mr. Perry's name?

"No one is killing this kids dream. they are saying aim HIGHER"

Oh I see.... that's what "they" are saying? Ohhh! Please Zeus, higher than what? And who said anything about killing his dream. Damn man, pick up your game.

And who said he is not aiming high? I believe he said he is aiming higher than Mr. Perry, so what did you read silly boy? Besides, if I am not mistaken, Tyler is pretty high, so WTF are you REALLY talking about? Is it the Christian slant that has you reaching for your comic books and haters manual?

Oops upside my head. That's the ticket ain't it? Shut the windows, throw out all the garlic and jump in your casket, silly little boy.

  • Tamara | July 23, 2011 3:37 AMReply

    What he said:

“I’m not closing the chapter on it, as people say. People ask why I’m not majoring in theater. I’m learning now what I’m doing wrong, what I’m doing well and what not to do next time. I hope to learn how to operate a business and do all of the budgeting. These productions can be very expensive.”

    What I read:

“I’m not closing the chapter on [making plays], as people say. People ask why I’m not majoring in theater. [It's because I'm actually majoring in both theater and filmmaking] I’m learning now what I’m doing wrong, what I’m doing well and what not to do next time. I hope to learn [all aspects of the Hollywood machine, including focusing on casting and talent and directorship] and how to operate a business and do all of the budgeting. These productions can be very expensive.”

Good luck to him. It's a hustle. A good friend of mine here in my small/large town is the TP of Christian Gospel play productions. He's in the process of doing big things in terms of an historical theater we have in the town.... He has drive and energy and more drive. I see that in this kid, so seriously good luck to him.

What's funny is what this story somewhat reminded me of. Replace "Thelron Pleas" with "Matty Rich", "Tyler Perry" with "Spike Lee", and "plays" with "films", and you've pretty much got the opening chapter of the Rich/Lee feud of the 1990's. Someone ought to advise Young Master Pleas that, no matter how good he thinks he is, he ought to keep his mouth shut and not disrespect the top dog in the field and genre he's trying to make it in. The press will blow it up and egg him on and, before he even knows it, he'll alienate the very people who could help him.

Anyway, sounds to me like it's more of a gimmick than anything else. A teenager. Five plays written. Same initials as Tyler Perry. Proclaims he's better than Perry. That's a story that could get some traction from local press. But there's a big HOWEVER here: no word on whether those five plays he wrote are actually any good, and if he has any real potential.

Personally, I don't think we need any more of the type of plays this guy is serving up.

  • Momo | July 23, 2011 2:35 AMReply

Why am I laughing at this. Yes, use Christianity to sell the same bulshitt over and over again. No, both of them need to go to film school like Steven Spielber and George Lucas, so we can look at there material 30 yrs from now and call it great.

  • jessie's girl | July 23, 2011 2:16 AMReply

@Akim agreed! When will he & Mr. Tyler take time to actually study their craft?

This means that minstrelsy will be kept alive for yet another generation.

I'm surprised I haven't heard of this guy. Don't want to be a Negative Nelly but it doesn't take much to entertain Georgia folks esp. Macon, GA folks. I'm sure he does a good a job as he can and if he's going to Morehouse I'm sure the guys there will give him good critiques and show him how to polish things up. Perhaps a famous alumni might show up and offer him an internship.

I love his confidence and energy. Someone just needs to take him under his/her wing.

    You snapped! LMBAO!!!

  • Akim | July 22, 2011 12:00 PMReply

Look, it's nice that this kid wants to study accounting in orfer to better budget his plays, but just like Tyler Perry, this boy seems more focused on the business side of things when he should also be focusing on perfecting his craft! He should also be attending some writing classes.

  • Vanessa | July 22, 2011 11:49 AMReply
