Movies For The Kids... Your Input Requested (Survey)

In short, to assist an upcoming screening program aimed at the under-18 crowd of African descent (black kids), I'd like some help from y'all in coming up with suggestions for feature films that would appeal to that specific audience.

Keep in mind that they don't have to be films about under-18 characters; they can be *adult* films that are safe enough and that would appeal to the under-18 crowd.

However, they should be "black films;" or films that tell stories primarily about black people, whether older releases and more recent; so, help a brotha out...

    Add to the list

    Johnny Mad Dog
    City of Men

  • Tamara | October 7, 2011 7:58 AMReply

    George Washington (2000)

    -sorry, but it begs repeating.

Also second House Party it was and remains, in my humble opinion, our "teen flick".

I also want to mention The War but black kids were not the main focus. Two black girls were central to the plot, to the story, though they were not the 'main' characters. Another Kevin Costner feature I loved yet most don't love... ;-)

An oh, 'Fresh' is one of my favs but I wonder if it'd be too much...

I also second 'Sounder' (can never get too much of Cicely Tyson, Kevin Hooks or Paul Winfield when they're on top of their game!)

  • Curtis | October 7, 2011 7:34 AMReply

Fantastic recommends (Neziah is a beast with the list!). I second Raising Victor Vargas, Tsotsi, Akeelah and the Bee, He Got Game, School Daze and Bustin' Loose!!! And House Party would be dope (actually saw that on the big screen), as would Passing Strange - good to mix it up with something different.

What about 'The Planet of Junior Brown' aka (groan to the video release name) Junior's Groove?

I keep forgetting I've never seen Aaron Loves Angela...

  • JMac | October 7, 2011 7:08 AMReply

    Fresh!!!! That counts, yes?

Pariah - when it comes out. Take a field trip.

    School Daze

Another vote for Bustin' Loose - first film I ever watched with a black lead.

I'd include Roots but it's not a feature film sooo - Mississippi Burning.

    Cry Freedom

    The Last Dragon, lol
