Interesting... Angela Bassett is attached to star and executive produce a new NBC legal drama titled Vanishing Point, created by Ben Ripley, the screenwriter of last year's time-bending thriller Source Code (directed by Duncan Jones).

The project is a described as a character-driven series revolving around two women. Bassett plays one of the women, and her character is described as follows:

A brilliant yet unsympathetic rainmaker at a powerful NYC law firm, whose world is suddenly and permanently upended by a health issue. Facing this crisis, she makes her condition public and vows to continue her practice with the help of a young brilliant attorney she chooses to be her right hand.

The actress who'll play the young brilliant attorney has yet to be cast (or has been cast, but who the actress is, has not been made public yet).

Reading that description, while not exactly the same story, I couldn't help but immediately think of another legal drama that revolves around 2 women - one older, and the other younger... Damages, with Glenn Close and Rose Byrne.

I hope this is as good, or better yet, I hope it's even stronger than Damages; it'll also be nice if the young brilliant attorney role goes to another black actress, but I seriously doubt that'll happen. You never known though.

Ben Ripley is executive producing the project alongside Bassett, as well as Deborah Spera and Maria Grasso for Sony TV.

NBC has committed to a script at this stage, so it's anyone's guess whether this will actually, eventually go to pilot, and then series.

It's exciting though; it's roles like what I imagine this one to be that I think Angela excels in. I remember when Shonda Rhimes' Scandal was first announced, Bassett's name was one of the first I thought of for the part of Olivia Pope, especially given what we knew of the real-life woman Pope is based on - Judy Smith.
