New Black Radical Imagination Film Series Tour Starts In September

The Black Radical Imagination series is set to begin its annual tour this fall, with the two founders of the series also debuting their own works in exhibition, stating this month in New York and Chicago.

The 2014/15 Black Radical Imagination film series tour will be starting up again this September, showcasing new experimental and Afro-futurist films from Ephraim Asili and Vashti Harrison, along with previous works by Jeannette Ehlers, Lauren Kelley, Lewis Vaughn, Terence Nance, Sanford Biggers, and Jabari Zuberi.

Programmed by Chicago-based filmmaker Amir George and L.A. based curator Erin Christovale, the goal of Black Radical imagination, according to both George and Christovale, is "to invoke a futurist aesthetic of the black image on screen. The visual pieces delve into the worlds of video art, film animation, narrative storytelling, and new media. Each artist contributes their own vision of a free changing world in a postmodern society."

In addition, both George and Christovale will have separate openings of their works in both New York and Chicago.

George’s work will be part of the exhibition “How To Make a Hood,” at the Washington Park Arts Incubator in Chicago on, 301 E Garfield Blvd, which is curated by LaKeisha Leek.

His work on display is a sculpted 3-channel video installation called "The Hood We Live In" which focuses on a civilization of hooded beings known as “Hoodonians.” The show continues until October 10th.

Christovale’s curated show, which opens this Thursday, Aug. 14 at The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCada,) located in Brooklyn, NYC, on 80 Hanson Pl, is "a/wake in the water: meditations on disaster," which features the work of filmmakers Kevin Jerome Everson, Cauleen Smith, Ulysses Jenkins, Tameka Norris, Danielle Lessovitz, the Institut de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine National, A. Sayeeda Clarke, Wanuri Kahiu, Muchiri Njenga (her short film Kichwateli is pictured above), Loretta Fahrenholz, and Observatory Media. 

Christovale’s show at MoCada  is open until Nov. 9th.
