55 Till now

NEW YORK, NY, April 20, 2012 – DeShaun Davis Films announces that pre-production is underway on independent feature film, 55 TILL NOW, a docudrama based on the 1955 murder of 14-year old Chicago black teenager Emmett Till in Glendora, Mississippi.

Unlike previous stories about Till, 55 TILL NOW focuses on racial reconciliation for those involved in the case that was essential to the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. A pivotal contributor to the movie is the current mayor of Glendora, Johnny B. Thomas, whose father was accused of being one of the men who participated in the kidnapping of Emmett Till. AfricanAmerican Mayor Thomas and his family have experienced years of rejection in the community because of his father’s alleged involvement in the murder.

“With the recent killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, the Emmett Till story reminds us more than ever how misconceptions lead to violence,” said Director DeShaun Davis. “Every crime is not racially motivated, but there are very real issues around racial profiling and injustice that still need to be addressed today. 55 Till Now explores the issues of crimes which are tainted by racial profiling, injustice and the need for mutual respect based on forgiveness and reconciliation.”

Young actor Jonah Lampkin landed the role of Till due to a remarkable resemblance to him and the ability to embody the Chicago teen in auditions. In the film, Lampkin will give the portrayal of Till a voice of reason crying out for healing and education on how to respond to hatred.

Production begins in Mississippi in May.

“This project focuses on the critical day at the Bryant store in Mississippi days before Till’s murder, along with never-before-seen interviews with eyewitnesses, leaders and celebrities,” saidDavis. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with such a talented young actor and to have the opportunity to tell this important and powerful story”, he adds.
