It was neck and neck between Chronicle and The Woman in Black with the former just edging out the latter for the No.1 slot this weekend.

Though it dropped 44% from last weekend, black cinema's Lord and Savior George Lucas' film Red Tails held on to the 4th place slot, beating Man on a Ledge; though it couldn't beat off Underworld Awakening, The Grey and One for the Money. And even that film stars the one person that EVERYONE hates - Katerine Heigl.

Sorry folks, I would have had this weekend's box office report much earlier as usual, but I had to wait to get this weekend's results for Pariah which took longer than usual. But I'll get to that in a minute.

First let me blow my own horn and say that S&A has been covering this French film and its black French star (Omar Sy) quiet extensively for a good 6+ months now; and I noticed a day or two ago, one mainstream news site picked up on all the transcontinental discussion about it (mostly French and American disagreements about its depiction of Omar Cy's character, which I expressed concern over from the very first time I wrote about the film in July 2011), and other sites picked up on that mainstream site's story as if it were something brand new.

Because this weekend's holiday weekend is unusual, since Christmas falls on a Sunday, and some films, such as War Horse, open today, this weekend's box office estimates are sure to fluctuate. But for a snapshot of where things stand right now, here's what it looks like.

This weekend's most impressive box office numbers came from Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol which opened in only just over 400 IMAX theaters this weekend to a very solid $13 million. The film opens in regular theaters nationwide on Weds Dec. 21 where its sure to give other films opening on that day, including David Fincher's (totally unecessary remake of) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a run for its money.

I'm a guy so I don't understand at all what the deal is with these movies, but Breaking Dawn again was No. 1, and, so far, looks like it can't be stopped, with worldwide box office totals at over $532 million.
