We interviewed filmmaker Dana Verde
about a year ago, when she was shopping her feature film debut in L.A. That romantic comedy, tentatively titled Jump off
has been in development with a studio and it has captured the interest of an investor. If all goes well, Verde may go into production in the fall.
The Cuban/Jamaican filmmaker has another film, which is now funding via Indiegogo. Titled A Promise
, the drama centers on Philomena “Philly" De Silva, played by Nia Fairweather
(The Roe Effect
), who plays young single mother and former foster care kid.
Philly was nine years old when she was taken away from her drug addicted parents and entered the foster care system. Now a recovering alcoholic, Philly is trying to remain sober to be a mother to her son Michael, played by Terrell Ransom Jr.
(Days of Our Lives
Although a bright child, her son is hanging out with the wrong crowd and gets into trouble in school, ultimately getting suspended for bullying. After the principal suggests Michael to go to boarding school, Philly faces the dilemma of sending him away or staying with him, since she’s emotionally dependent on him, and taking care of him keeps her from going back to alcohol.
Here’s more about the film from the filmmaker:
A Promise has many layers and deals with the long terms affects of child abuse i.e. neglect, single motherhood and having the courage to forgive, heal and move on when life has thrown you so many curve balls. I want to depict a young inner city mother with intelligence and creativity. She is a good mother despite all she's been through. But without support, raising a child is hard and I want to show that as well.
Despite the subject manner, the film has a lot of humor in it and also a little romance too.
