In a move to make herself more "hands on" and involved with her rating challenged cable network, Oprah Winfrey announced today that she will become the permanent CEO and chief creative officer of OWN.

In a statement released today, Winfrey said: "I am ready to dedicate my full creative energy and focus as the full time CEO of OWN, and to unleash the full potential of the network."

It was also announced that, from now on, all future television production at Harpo Studios would be directed exclusively to OWN.

The move comes just two months after the network announced that the original OWN CEO Christina Norman would leave the network and would be replaced by an interim CEO, Discovery Communications COO Peter Liguori.

Winfrey will officially take over her new positions in the fall.

"Discovery expects to pump more money into its joint venture OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.

"While we have made progress with OWN, we believe based on current business expectation we will fun in excess of our prior $50 million incremental estimate," said Singer, CFO of Discovery during the company's first quarter earnings call Thursday morning. "The funding level will be reflective of our ratings progress in the next several quarters."

Discovery has already invested $215 million in the channel, including $57 million in the first quarter.

David Zaslav, Discovery CEO said Discovery remains committed to OWN despite a slow start.

"The ratings have . . . been below our expectations and so we've been digging in. We're focused on what does the audience want from OWN," Zaslav said." -Jon Lafayette -- Broadcasting & Cable, 4/28/2011

The above explains why Oprah is bypassing retirement. Echoing LvFlg's statement "The network - will do fine eventually…BUT she [must] know by now that having you own network is NOT the same as having your own show."

If she didn't know I'm sure David Zaslav, Discovery CEO convinced her.

"The almighty, all powerful, all knowing, omnipotent O does it because, in her eyes, no one can do it better than her. Go on wit yo’ bad self, gurl! (*hint of sarcasm*)"

A bit of sarcasm it might be but facts don't lie. Opray is the greatest person on earth that does what she does best... see has a keen insight into the psyche/soul of human emotions. She knows what works and ahe has the power and courage to roll it out. And then of course BINGO, the cream comes to the top! Come on now, y'all know the woman has a midas touch... don't you?
