Owner of Universal Pictures Admits The Obvious - 'Battleship' Is A Big Flop

Alas not even the magnetic presence of Rihanna could save it from its doom. It's rare when a studio exec admits when the studio makes a mistake; but that's what happened this past Friday

Brian Roberts, the Chairman of Comcast, which owns NBU/Universal, publicly admitted in a speech on Friday at a business conference in New York, that Battleship has been a big flop for the studio.

He said that it was "an unfortunate large miss" that will have "a negative quarter impact on NBCUniversal" in contrast to last year, when Universal was rolling in dough, thanks to Fast Five and Bridemaids.

The media, however, hasn't covered the flop that Battleship has been for the studio, mainly because, as some claim, there was so much attention and so much written about John Carter, and what a financial disaster that was for Walt Disney Pictures, that Battleship got overlooked.

Also the fact that both John Carter and Battleship toplined the supposed big new "hot Hollywood discovery" Taylor Kitsch who is now 0 for 2.

Rihanna will survive of course. She won't be affected at all,  but Kitsch on the other hand looks like he'll be making making his next appearance working the midnight shift at a 7-11 in El Paso.

RiRi was good for what she was given. Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights cannot carry a film (John Carter). Not everyone has charisma when it comes to the big screen, he's not that attractive and his acting is C rated at best.

Wow, I'm shocked, I agree with every comment on this post except SAVAGES looks good, But Taylor will be back as for Rihanna, everyone wants to be in hollywood but hollywood is not for everyone, I see her as in worse shape than Beyonce as actress UNLESSS she takes acting classes , cause you be surprised how many of these singer slash somethings!!!

The question has to be asked what tv show will get axed or see its budget cut to make up for the lost NBC/Universal will suffer from this mess. The SYFY version was better and it had Mario Van Peebles as the hero. As for Rihanna-she needs to get somewhere and sit down-how many folk refused to look at this film because of her? If she want an acting career-go indy or take roles where you aren't the second-third biggest name in a film.

Um no, the Syfy knockoff was bad. Poor script, poor special effects, and so-so special effects.

I just saw Battleship and it was an OK popcorn flick.

People are not going to stay away from this film because Rihanna is a supporting player who mumbles her lines. People won't see the movie because it's just OK and there are no big stars with substantial roles. Nothing on the screen was novel, although I do think that film displayed more logic and class than the racist Transformer flicks. Battleship does a nice job at including what seems to be large number of real veterans.

They needed to rethink the concept. Why the hell is a movie called Battleship & based on a board game suddenly about aliens? They couldn't come up with somethingore sensical? Like, I don't know, an American battleship finds itself stranded in hostile territory w/no backup & is forced to protect itself...there could have been a traitor/terrorist on board and the whole thing would have made a lot more sense. I think the alien angle was lazy, cheap, & off-putting.

Rihanna will survive? Survive what -- her Oscar-caliber acting career? She should fire her people: whoever handles the movie side of her "brand." What a silly choice as her first foot out into the acting world. She should dig for a dimensional, well developed, character-centered script and not jump on anything until she finds it; that is, if she's serious about making the transition.

Taylor Kitsch will recover. Especially if his next movie the new Action/Crime film by Oliver Stone "Savages" performs well. He'll probably take the whole indie route for a year to prove to people that has some acting credibility. Then maybe a couple small roles in straight DVD/Feature films to make up for taking a pay cut for those indies. I can see him getting another chance in the next 2 years to do leading man material. A couples of flops might get Hollywood nervous. It would take 10 more in a row for them to consider developing a more Diverse casting system.

    Taylor Kitsch will recover

Say that to Josh Lucas -A miles better actor than Kitsch-, Orlando Bloom -Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown make no favors- or Josh Harnett

the new Action/Crime film by Oliver Stone "Savages" performs well

Don't have a lot of hope for Oliver Stone. Since 1996 he didn't make a good film

Kitsch is white therefore his career will survive this flop. Period.

"A couples of flops might get Hollywood nervous. It would take 10 more in a row for them to consider developing a more Diverse casting system."

Exactly!! Taylor will be given many more chances to fail.

    yep

  • Leon Breckenridge | June 3, 2012 1:35 PMReply

He will be in Savages so he will be okay. Unfortunately Hollywood think that the White Male Hero is needed for their movies. They will learn.

  • Xas | June 29, 2012 4:44 AM

Actually since "Nixon", Oliver Stone didn't make a good film in YEARS. He's like the American Claude Lelouch. Also if Taylor Kitsch fail to have excellent reviews -Which is posible because Aaron Johnson and Benicio Del Toro are the standouts according to many test screeners- he's OUT of the leading consideration or even the A-List. Most actors suffered this curse for less back-to-back flops or bombs -Like Kitsch-: Josh Lucas, Josh Harnett, Orlando Bloom, Sam Jones... So, why Taylor Kitsch will be different? He's an average looking guy with limited range and talent and zero charisma

  • Sergio | June 3, 2012 1:57 PM

That depends on how good Savages is and he in it. Oliver Stone has made his fair share of stinkers as well
