From director Damir Radonic and screenwriter Salah Sabiti comes a South African dramedy feature titled Taka Takata, which will screen at the Pan African Film Festival in LA this month.

Starring Trevor Noah, Kagiso Lediga, and Anele Mdoda, the synopsis for the film reads:

The story of a local football team in Johannesburg that ranks at the bottom of a low level champions league. In order to better its performances, the coach of the team decides to fly to Brazil to buy some football players from the favelas. Their journey is told through Rasta, an unlikely hero who goes through a series of unexpected events, accompanied by Pico, the Brazilian player, Pinki, the owner of a hair salon and a Serbian coach who uses unusual methods of training. This is a comedy about a community, a small soccer team … a thousand dreams, where reality is not always as it seems.

The synopsis got my attention when I first read it; it sounds like a wholly original idea that could present opportunities for some smart, political, economic and social commentary via humor.

But then I watched the trailer, and, well, it didn't hook me. It's 5 1/2-minutes long (too long), and just kind of spurts along with no real peaks or valleys to tickle my emotions. If I hadn't read the synopsis first, I'm not so sure I would've immediately figured out what the heck the story is.

But I'm interested enough, based on the synopsis alone, that I'd see this; and there are parts of the trailer that appear suggest it could be something funny and nutty.

PAFF 2013 will take place at the new Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills 15 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles, and will kick off festivities with a star-studded Opening Night Gala on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills 15 theatre.
