About That Popular 'Black Films Don't Sell ...Preview 'The Walls Of Dakar' (How Graffiti Culture Warned Of A Coming Insurgency In Senegal)
Contained within the graffiti on the walls of the city of Dakar, are artistic expressions of dissent by artists from varied backgrounds. Labeled rebels, these artists inspired and influenced a collective realization that, after some time, culminated in an uprising of the people.
The revolt that began last summer, as people took to the streets to oppose a new law being discussed in parliament, which would allow a presidential candidate to take power with just 25% of the vote.
The controversy stemmed from the fact that, although the Senegalese constitution did not allow a president to serve more than two terms, then President Wade amended the constitution, so that it would allow him to run for a third term. Several opposition movements emerged to contest the amendment. In the end, Macky Sall won the election earlier this year.
Directed by Abdoul Aziz Cissé, The Walls of Dakar takes a look at the above-mentioned graffiti culture that foreshadowed the coming insurgency.
The film will make its premiere at TIFF next month.
