Timely, given that it was just a couple of days ago that I posted the following on my personal Facebook page:

... there might be a goldmine of stories within individual hip-hop tracks for filmmakers to explore/exploit.

The comment was longer, but that was the highlight.

It's been reported this morning that Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit Entertainment company partner, Shakim Compere, will produce a feature film based on rapper Meek Mill's track The Tony Story, which will star Mill himself.

The Tony Story is also a novel, published in paperback and ebook on May 1.

So what's The Tony Story about?

Tony and Ty had big dreams of getting rich. Although they grew up like brothers, once money and envy entered the equation, greed took over and loyalty went out the door. After a deadly shooting, the streets of Philly were in an uproar and the lives of many people revolved around revenge.

Gold digger Kee capitalized on the built-up tension; but before she could really enjoy the fruits of her labor, she was thrust into the middle of a street war with the cost being her life.

Trust was not an option and revenge was the only thing anyone had in common. Paulie wanted revenge for his cousin; LB wanted revenge for his brother. They both had blood in their eyes and murder in mind; names were called while gunners lurked in the shadows. It became bigger than the almighty dollar and no one was safe.

Philly won't be the same after you're a witness to Tony Story.

James Lindsay of Dream Chasers Films will co-produce with Flavor Unit.

Cess Silvera, who helmed the 2002 Jamaican crime drama, Shottas, will direct The Tony Story, from a script penned by Carlito Rodriquez.

    Another hood/gangster flick. *Yawns*

Yep. It's sad that this is the only type of story that some choose to write/produce. There are thousands of stories to tell.

Agreed. Let's just say this project won't be "raising the bar", and politely leave it at that.

*rolls eyes to the heavens* we are on the same page, enough already. It is not so much with the stories being told and made, I just don't want it to be one of my options when I pay $10-12 to watch entertainment on the big screen. This particular story has been told a dozen times.
