As we reported a week or two ago, one of the hardest working men in Showbiz, Samuel L. Jackson, joined the cast of MGM's upcoming reboot of Robocop, with Brazilian helmer Jose Padilha (probably best know for Elite Squad, and its sequel) directing the film.

Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) will star as the title character, and Gary Oldman will play the mad scientist who created him.

As for Sam Jackson, he's signed on to play a character named Pat Novak, described as "a charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world."

I don't recall a Pat Novak in the original. Maybe his character will be similar to that played by Ronny Cox in the original flick.

So, let me get the chant going... will the brotha live to see the end of the flick, or will Robocop thump him? :)

Strike Entertainment is producing the movie, which is aiming for a September shoot in Toronto, and a summer 2013 release.

An official synopsis has also been released:

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front.

Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex's life.

He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak.

The film is currently in pre-production.

The original trio of Robocop movies (1987, 1990, 1993) grossed $110 million collectively ($215 million when adjusted for inflation).

'RoboCop' Remake --- is not necessary. Why can't there remain the cheesiness of the original? This plot doesn't sound anywhere near interesting. It's basic. The only reason I see is to show new technologies with the cgi and alla dat. I mean....blech. With that said, I'll probably rent it. I wonder if there are any talks for a "Virtuosity" remake on the table? Yes? No? That "gem" could stand a bit of 21st century computer technologies improvement. ;-)

Much like Total Recall, I don't see the need for this. There's not much chance that this could be done any better than Verhoeven did it. My prediction is that Jackson's character will be turned into a bloody mound of ground beef by a hail of machine gun bullets less than halfway through the movie.

I think it's more a reboot which isn't necessarily bad. Franchises are designed to persist. If it was intended to be a one-off remake (like "Footloose," for instance), certainly be against it. Hollywood will always greenlight along the path of least resistance.

Total Recall, Fright Night, Robocop... sigh...

I'm personally sick of all the damn remakes. How about Hollywood take a closer look at all us indie writers! Geesh~
