Apparently, anticipation was high for last night's episode, after 2 weeks of repeats, and Scandalistas must have tuned in like they never have before; although, quite possibly, the series attracted some new fans as well.

ABC, Shonda Rhimes and star Kerry Washington must be all-too pleased! 6 more episodes to go and it's goodbye until the fall, and Scandal-withdrawal will take over America.

The numbers for Thursday, March 21 via press release from ABC, below:

Wife Swap Opens Strong/Grey's is Thursday's #1 Show/Scandal Returns with Biggest Audience Ever

With the season opener of Wife Swap, Grey's and the return of Scandal (first original since 2/21), ABC ranked #1 on Thursday in Adults 18-49 (tying Fox with American Idol and Glee). Among Adults 18-49, ABC tied its top-rated Thursday with series programming in nearly 6 months - since 10/4/12.

Up sharply over its last season premiere (on 4/2/10) in Total Viewers (+43%) and Adults 18-49 (+42%), ABC's Wife Swap opener topped all of the telecasts in its previous season to earn its best numbers since April 2009 - since 4/17/09. Wife Swap delivered ABC's highest rating in the time period with series programming in 5 months - since 10/18/12. From start to finish the ABC unscripted show gained 8% in viewers and 20% in young adults, despite facing Idol in the hour.

Shooting up from its lead-in at 9pm (+71%), ABC's Grey's Anatomy emerged as Thursday's #1 TV show in Adults 18-49, topping Idol on the night for the first time ever. Grey's won the 9 o'clock hour in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. Gaining week to week in viewers (+11%) and young adults (+12%), Grey's delivered its most-watched telecast in 10 weeks - since 1/10/13.

On its return, ABC's Scandal won the 10 o'clock hour in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. In fact Scandal has been the #1 show in the hour in Adults 18-49 on 7 of its last 8 original telecasts. Scandal ranked as the #1 broadcast program in prime time with 191k tweets, topping American Idol by 68% (113k). Delivering its best-ever retention of Grey's in Total Viewers (95%), Scandal marked the series most-watched telecast ever.

I was excited about this show from the moment I first saw it advertised. I've watched every original episode, from the premiere to date. 'Scandal' is already a great show; and it's still building.
Then there's the fabulous Kerry Washington, a very talented actor and a social/political activist. Her appearance on 'Real Time' with Bill Maher was a thing of beauty! She made it clear that she is aware, informed, engaged, active, and articulate.
In 'Scandal' we have a trifecta of multi talented women: Judy Smith (the inspiration), Shonda Rhimes (the creator), and Kerry Washington (the animator). Add to that a fascinating cast of characters and the outstanding actors portraying them. Top it off with the steaming inferno hot chemistry between Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn. What's not to like!!!
Congratulations to 'Scandal', and much continued success.

I feel like as big a success this show is, Kerry Washington is not as celebrated as she should be by ABC/Disney. ABC has cancelled so many shows over the last year, the fact that this show not only survived but is winning its timeslot is extraordinary. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like if Kerry was a Blonde, her face would be plastered across magazines and media billboards, maybe given her own float at the next Disney parade.

@BURR - Kerry was at the Oscar's for Django, not Scandal. I can't recall Ellen P. having been in any motion pictures. Not sure what Emily's credits are far as film goes though.

Kerry needs to land some major magazine covers. Not just Ebony, Essence, or other niche magazines. It's an absolute bonus that Kerry is very smart and involved in politics and activism. She should be so much more well known!!

Cherish, the feminist website Jezebel actually has an interesting article about Kerry Washington and they are concerned about her not getting mainstream magazine covers. Even though Scandal is a success, Kerry Washington has not gotten the cover of Vogue, Marie Claire, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Elle, ect. Some people feel it is due to race while other says it is due to economics that black women don't sell for mainstream white female fashion magazines.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I see more of Kerry Washington than I do Emily VanCamp or Ellen Pompeo. Tell me which of the three presented at ABC's Oscar telecast? Both Revenge & Scandal had epic commercials featuring their leads that aired during the show, too. Ain't no network got time for racial discrimination when there's money to be made.
